Default palomar 300A

I have read on an auction site [ what a source for truth] that the palomar 300A has two dead key settings ...on low the amp can be driven with up to 100 dead key [driver tubes are out of line....
and on high the amp should only be driven with max 10 watt dead key...
Is this correct info??
I owned one of these units and never knew this if it is true..

anyone know for sure?
thanks

.

YUP, you can actually get more out of it on the low side than on the high side if you drive it with an external amplifier. You cannot put hi drive into the "High Side".

30 or 40 watts swinging to 100 is OK for those four 6LF6's (or KD's or LR's or maybe even 8950's). Expect 400 watts swinging to 650 or so out.

lol yeah its true you can drive the piss outta them on the low side.... but they arent the cleanest amp in the world when you do this..

one good thing about the palamars is you can swap the tubes to 6mb6's.... u can pick them up all day long for around 12 bucks... Might have to raise the lid some... they are tall like the old 6lf6's....

This is what made this a better amp than the Skipper and others! They took the large and heavy transformer and put it outboard. More room for the other parts and I'm sure it helped keep the a/c noise to a minimum.

The 300a was about as good as you could get from Palomar. The extra piece could be a pain, but well worth it!

At the end of the day it was still a CB amp, but better than most. If you want even a better amp, find yourself a Pride DX-300!

When i got my amp it had 2 taller tubes in it, was modulating oneday and the taller tubes grounded against the cover. To fix that i took a piece of LEATHER and layed it between the tubes and cover, no problem since!!
