which final is good to use and is better? 1969 is cheaper than 2312. wanted to replace finals in dx88 which uses the 2312. finals are 2078 now.

"Better?" I don't know.

However the specs look practically identical:

Why use either, with the newer transistor replacements out today.. There is kits to mod them to even older radio models, and I've seen cobra 29LTDs with 35 watts plus swing with them!!!

The 1969 is a great transistor and they're still widely available. You can get way more than 35 watts out of a 1969 in a Cobra29. I routinely get 45-50 out without messing with the output filter coils. Personally I like that mod the best because if you ever want to put it back to stock, it's not that hard to do.

Anyway, if you want to go the FET route, you can use the ERF2030 for 25-30 watts or the IRF520 if you want 40-50 watts.

You're DX88 currently has 2078s? Were these replacements?

Once had a tech look in my radio (that wasn't bought from him) and remark that it had 2312s which to him indicated the manufactorer used a better quality of components when building the radio. He stated individually the 2312 transistor's performance was not that much greater than a 1969 to notice the difference, however in his opinion they would outlast a 1969.

Just as some today will argue while a MOSFET may get you more watts on the meter it may not have as clean of audio and may be more prone to intolerance resulting in failure.

What it all boils down to is; who is tuning the radio and how much they attempt to obtain with regard to component limitations.

I think most older Galaxy 88's used the dual 1969 set-up. Yours has either been swapped out at one time or maybe Galaxy ended up with a batch or 2312's so they used em. The 2312 is slightly stronger but I doubt anyone would notice.

thanks for all the inputs on this matter, yes, the 2078 was an experiment that i want to try. it had 2166 in all finals. found that out after i had radio fixed. power is real low. i probably get a couple of 1969 and replace the finals now. i just wanted to find out which one was better. i just want to get it back to close to normal. don't want to do any mosfets on it, due to sound quality after these kinds of mods.
