How do you set up your CB:

with the SQL turned all the way left and control it with the RF Gain

or with the RF turned all the way right and control it with the SQL


I was told SQL left NB/ANL off and control with RF

I don't see much diff. ?

Use the NB/ANL to cut out static in your receive to your liking. Same goes for sqelch. Turn up the squelch until it shuts off the sound. Are you using a Cobra 29LTD or similar? More info needed...

If you have reason to use the NB/ANL, then use it. If you haven't a reason, then don't. Just depends on the noise you're trying to get rid of.
RF gain. Personally, I like it all the way UP. That tends to make the weak ones easier to hear. It also increases noise. So, if you don't wanna listen to the noise in the background with no signal, use the SQL to stop it. Noise levels change, so that SQL will change, the setting varies with the noise. The SQL does NOT do the same thing as the RF gain control does. That RF gain controls sensitivity. The SQL, in effect, just turns off the speaker so a stronger signal has to be present before you hear anything. If you decrease sensitivity, that 'stronger signal' has to really be stronger to be heard. Think of it like decreasing the sensitivity in your fingers. At some point they get numb. You won't know you're being cooked till you smell stuff burning, you know?
The whole idea is to make things comfortable to listen to without a lot of 'extra' noise. Adjust to suit your self. That's what's 'best' for you.

I am running a cobra 29 LTDI usually run the noise limiter in the middle at ANL. I have tried it with RF gain maximum and the squelch turned up to stop the noise. Somewhere around 11 o'clock, and I have ran it with the squelch wide open, and used the RF to turn down the noise. Some where around one o'clock. I guess there's just no set it and forget it situation

It's expensive for budget CB use, but if any of you want to try something that will just crush the band noise, look at the BHI ANEM module. It is so good with the adaptive DSP it has that I run 2m FM simplex without squelch when working distant stations...it knocks the band noise out THAT much.

It is worth every cent....doesn't kill impulse noise, but it kills band noise/hash dead.
