If any radio had a chance to sit around for awhile - chances are that the pots may need to be cleaned. That may explain why the squech isn't working - the pot may be dirty. Hear any scratching sounds in the speaker when any of the knobs are turned? That is a dirty pot if it does...
Another thing - just turn it on and let it set for a few hours w/o messing with it. Electrolytic caps are funny that way. Also: do you have a 50 ohm dummy load and a power meter? Don't try to key up the radio w/o one. Or - use a known good antenna.
