Default APRS via Web

Has anyone been able to reliably receive aprs text messages from the web? I can send and receive messages to myself from the vx-8r, but when I try to send myself a text message from a website like findu.com, I never receive it on the radio although I see the packets on aprs.fi. Also, I've had other stations send messages that I never get on the vx-8r but again see on aprs.fi.

Does anyone have any insight on this as it's driving me crazy.

I must be blind, I can not find a link that will allow me to send a message from the web.

I tried and so far is doesn't work.

I left my radio someplace that has ok, but not great signal and I just tried again.

I will check tonight, to see if I got the message.

Is it hidden because it doesn't work?

Try openaprs.net. Before you can send a message from that site, you have to register via your APRS radio so they can confirm you're a licensed ham. It has instructions on how to do this. I've successfully sent messages from that one.

APRS Question:

If I send a message through the website, does it then go out every iGate in the world?

Also, if I send a message via radio, does it also go out every iGate in the world?

The findu.com message link does work, as you can see the packets and the message on the aprs.fi website. So it apparently appears to be sending the message.

My dilemma is that if I send a message to myself from the vx-8r over RF (aka VFO B aprs) my vx-8r will flash the strobe light and sound the message signal. At this point I see the message I sent show up in the list and the original message showing the ACK.

If I try the webgates or have someone send me a message from their vx-8r or other aprs capable radio over rf, I never get alerted or see any message arrive.

This is why I am stumped and don't understand why I can't receive all messages.

Just signed up for that 'openaprs' thingy. Want to try the messaging thing. Figure after making enough mistakes I'll probably figure it out, maybe. Oh well, what else do I have to do, right?

This is my understanding: Messages sent via radio or the web are forwarded to all the iGates. When a digipeater that is an iGate hears your beacon, it sees that you have a message waiting and sends it to you. It then records that the message was delivered (or not after however long is allowed) so that other iGates won't resend it. Sometimes the last part doesn't seem to work quick enough, so you get the message more than once (that's happened to me).

I don't think I've ever gotten a message to work from aprs.fi. I have sporadically gotten them from openaprs.net. The most consistent delivery that was from software has always been from UI-View, although that software is dead now.
