| | The local Emergency Operations Center is about it at present. The local club does most of the work, the EOC does most of the 'co$t' (after approval of course). The club is sort of 'new', the membership having changed over time. Almost a continual 'learning experience' sort of thingy. One member retired from the FAA as an electronics technician so he does most of the 'designing' and installing (unless he can talk someone else into doing it, sort of), the rest of us sort of follow directions and contribute little 'gems of knowledge' occasionally. My involvement is more of the 'take up the slack' sort of thingy, and making suggestions occasionally. (Don't care how many letters are in 'volunteer', it's still a dirty four letter word! )
You have a sort of 'clue' about what I'm doing now from what I've asked you lately. Basically trying to make things easier/'lazy-er', sort of, kind'a. If I can do it, any dummy ought'a be able to, right? RIGHT!
After 'boiling' all of that down, skimming off the dregs, what it amounts to is that the local EOC covers the south eastern part of the state for emergency communications. As a whole, it does a very nice job of it. I am not any sort of 'king pin' in it (geez! What a thought.), but I do enjoy it.

I also know this is sort of not what you asked, but whatever... Here's a small look at it, sort of; www.w5cuq.com |

| | I've been involved in Navy-Marine MARS since early last summer. Other than checking into the daily traffic nets, I'm also handling traffic one day a week. I'm on the state Auxilliary Radio Team. Somehow I just got talked into being the Training Assistant for the state. That's what I get for actually reading the published material! |

| | RACES here. Spent years as an EMT and FF as well, but all the nonsense in that around here burned me out.
RACES in NJ unfortunately isn't what I'd expected. I went to a county level meeting and asked things like where are the disaster plans by scenario posted? Not only aren't they posted, but they don't exist...or at least as far as our local coordinators know.
There is little to no coordination with the national guard or state police, so who knows what is even distributed as far as what services and resources RACES can make available or what may be redundant or simply ignored.
I believe in the mission of RACES, but I'm a skeptic that it may never be permitted to activate when needed. I'm not sure all those who should be, are even aware of the local RACES chapters. |

| | SR385,
I agree about the plans thingy. In this day and age the problem is information 'over-load' sort of, and where to find the information you're looking for.
All emergency planning has benefits. The hard part is selecting the 'right' agency to help in whatever you're doing. Then coordinating all that 'help'. And keeping up with any 'new' developments that happen along while you're doing all that other stuff. Sounds like a lot of @#$ fun, doesn't it??
