Default MARS: do you know what it's about?

I was talking to some locals on the radio not long ago and they didn't know what MARS is or really anything about it. MARS (and other emergency services) are really a great way to serve the community doing something that is your hobby! I'm curious if there are folks that read this site that would like a better explanation of what MARS is all about and what's in it for them to join up?

Well it's actually outside the amateur radio service, you get a different call sign. It's an auxiliary and emergency communications channel.

They operate on the HF frequencies as well as others, but the frequencies are outside the amateur allocations. This is why you see the "MARS" mod information.

I would. It's Military Auxiliary Radio Service?

Mostly it's known as a mod for armature radios to be used outside of approved bands.

Please post away.

MARS- Military Affiliated Radio Service. Which operates on various HF and 2 meter frequencies. It is a means of passing messages using the standard military 12 line format. It is controlled by a Net Control who takes check ins and will pass messages by order of priority. My MARS Callsign if you will is AAT3PZ. I will be setting up a MARS Station in Iraq shortly. It will be the first one north of Bahgdad since the war started.

Don't forget that in the U.S., the primary mission of MARS is to be able to provide emergency communications in a time of need. MARS prides itself on being able to get a message out (or get one back) under just about any circumstances with speed and accuracy.

MSJ, That is pretty cool that you're setting up a station in Iraq.

My uncle told me that in the '70's while deployed to Vietnam, aboard a ship in the Navy he was able to talk to his daughter over the radio thanks to a NAVMARCORMARS/amateur station that had a telephone patch. He said he has never forgotten that and it made a lasting impression that people who were ordinary citizens would volunteer to make something like that possible.
