Default Sky-Warn......

Anybody here at WWRF participate in the Sky-Warn program......????

It seems to be quite popular here in South Jersey with several 2m Sky-Warn nets through the week. Not much tornado activity here, but we do get the occassional hurricane brushing by, but are more likely to get pounded by coastal Nor'Easter storms.
Our one local repeater club is trying to round up some new prospects so we can get the NWS to send an instructor down here for the qualification / certification class.
I plan to attend if at all possible......

Default SKYWARN

I am attending the skywarn class Monday evening in fact.

We have been reporting weather conditions via MURS radio with 2 other counties on MURS. All REACT Members. All of us have MURS on the base and also mobile units.

i was a member of the regonal skywarn program but thats as far as it went. the local weather service decided to frop the ball and not do anything as far as issung the skywarn member numbers. they said they had more important things to do, mind you that was durring the calmest weather year we have had in a long time. no rain storms for nearly 2 months. i washed my hands of that affair.

i live up north

we do not have tornado's
we do not have hurricanes
we do not have earthquakes

we may get isolated flooding in the spring and we get snow in the winter. severe weather is basically non exixtant here except for a few months in the winter.

I am not a member of SKYWARN - as of yet. But I am an eSpotter for the National Weather Service and have been for only the past year. In fact, the reason I got back into radio and get my Ham Tech/General license was to participate in Buena Vista Co IA storm spotting. So I am very new to being a Ham and to spotting overall. I have been on a couple of tornado chases in Kansas and other places. I've become aquainted with Severe/TOR warned storms. I plan to join the SKYWARN program - so any tips you can give me here on this thread would be greatly appreciated. What in particular? Frankly - every aspect is still unknown to me.

Do they just teach you about identifying storms or radio protocol in SKYWARN? I am OK with identifying, but I am not certain of the useage of the 2m radio or any HF rules/regs...

I took a Skywarn class in Feb 09. Was taught what to look for and report. Such as hail size (pea, nickel, golf ball, etc.), clouds, rotation. It was fun. And about 6 hours long. Look at their site it may give you some help. Take good look at some cool radio hook ups in some of the chase vehicles.

They teach you about identifying storms. More so than radio protocol in SKYWARN? You all ready know how to do that.

I joined the SKYWARN forum:
SKYWARN ONLINE

Yeah, I use and understand some radar stuff - not a pro by any standard. I was in Quinter KS last year and was within 3/4 of a mile of the big EF4 tornado. I'd seen and captured on film about six tornadoes form May 22 & 23 in KS.

I really just need to understand the radio protocol during storms...

Thanks.
I am an online eSpotter - as well as warning the County Emergency MGR directly by phone. Often with the forecast if something is going to happen in our county.

My mistake.
My question should have been: What should the 2m phone QSO sound like? Just use regular radio protocol and give obsevations on air using key words? I haven't had the opportunity to do this yet. Should messages be relayed to SKYWARN base stations? Are they using HF freqs - or just simplex 2m? Questions like that - I guess...
