As Jazz says, older ones have Bipolar (pills) as you call them and newer ones have Mosfets. Generally speaking Mosfets often produce less IMD (cleaner signal) and work better in broad band amplifier stages. The problem is the Mosfets used in CB applications were designed for switch mode use and never intended for the linear mode service they have been pressed into. Real RF Mosfets designed for linear use are much more expensive and almost never used on this band. |
