Here is my dumb question of the day.

I see computer connections for radios, but I am not sure what is being done by the computer and what is being done by the radio. It appears that the radio is a standalone device and the computer is only used for certain protocols, logging and other auxiliary functions. Tell me how it is now.

Or to look at it from the other side: Is there a reason why all the memory function, changing radio stations, tracking……are not handled by a computer utilizing a USB to connect to the radio which acts like a computer hardware peripheral. I am thinking the radio would have no knobs, no buttons, antenna connections, but everything else would be handled by the USB interface going to a computer. It looks like a very elegant solution, but.....?

i know this should probably be in the cb area but i figure hams might know a little more about this, no offence to you cbers out there. i still havent received my call sign yet and im iching to get started on a project, so ive decided to construct a 4 element quad antenna for my cb tuned for ch.19 (27.185)MHz, which has a full wavelength of 36.2056 feet. ive looked at some diy's on the net and i dont fully understand what im looking at. i know it sounds bad but im 31yrs of age with an 8th grade education, however im willing to work hard at understanding this stuff. all i need is the right guidance and the right tools/resorces. the diy's ive looked at seem targeted twards people who have an extensive knowledge about antennas. is there any sites out there for beginers or like quad antennas for dummies w/8th grade educations or something? Driven element??? Reflector element??? Directors??? please help!!! i want to know this stuff

It looks like there will be the possibility for some good VHF Dxing early Tuesday morning.
Leonid meteor shower to peak Tuesday - CNN.com
If I get a slow moment at work, I'll try monitoring on 6 meters with my HT. You never know. Stranger things have happened than scatter contacts on an HT. The only problem is that it will only do AM or FM. SSB or CW is out. I have been unable to find any dedicated scatter frequencies for AM or FM. Is there such a thing?

The guy's in Benson NC knows how to run a hamfest!

We arrived early to set up and meet with other dealers. Sure was a lot of folks there. But seems no one had money to buy much. So sold nothing that I brought. Did sell a few itiems that I purchased there.

Picked up a few things.
Solder station. for 20 bucks
Desolder station for 20 bucks
Realistic HTX-100 for 30 bucks.

Other than not selling much really had a great time. Met a lot of folks.

Well as a lot of you know I have had some antenna problems the last year, mainly the fact that my Cushcrap A3 is pretty much done for. I'll never buy another Cushcraft antenna after having dealt with their customer service and quality of build on the tribanders. MFJ now makes them but I doubt things are any better. It really got beat up last winter and is still hanging on the tower in an unusable state. It is about 30 years old AKAIK. I am the 3'rd owner. The tower it is on is at least that old and the rotator that turns it all has a broken ring gear.I have been thinking about a new tower next year and had pretty much decided on a 56 foot Delhi self supporting tower and had planned to build a five band two element quad to put on it. I have since been looking at the Trylon Titan range of towers. I know of one Titan around here and I have climbed it. It is a wonderful tower.Titans are not cheap but you get what you pay for I guess.I am looking at the 64 foot Titan T-300 which is rather $$$ but it will outlast my lifetime. As for the antenna I have decided pretty much to go with the Hygain TH11-DX which is an 11 element five band yagi on a 24 foot boom. This all depends on how much money I can save up between now and next summer/fall.

My question to you is are any of you familiar with the Titan series of towers and especially with the TH11-DX or any of the Thunderbird series antennas from Hygain? They look good on paper but my concern is for strength mainly.I get a lot of wind here and sometimes that wind comes with some icing. that's pretty much the reason I decided to stay away from the quad. That and the probelms erecting and maintaining such a beast. At least a yagi is two dimensional and not three like the quad.
