IM sorry here guys , but there time and place has come and gone as far as IM concerned. I can not believe what guys will pay for these dinosaurs. Sure there good RX and TX'ing radio. But 200 to 500 for one used ? !! No Way !!

You try finding parts for those nowadays ! or a replacement freq counter read out ! I just don't understand what these guys are thinking putting up the cash for these ? The way I look at it is this , You could get a used older 148 GTL or Grant and do just as good , You could even put a brand new freq counter on those. (that's all those radios are is the 2000 in a mobile form)

Not to mention the power supplies in those radios , especially after they were used bord out on AM and especially SSB !! You would still be one up using a nice power supply on the other radios I mentioned. Oh , you can forget modifying the Cobra 2000s with Mosfets as well because there wouldn't be enough power from the inner supply to handle them.

I just don't see the big deal anymore with the Cobra 2000s , although I see negativity as it is. This is just my opinion and you guys out there thinking about putting up some big cash for one , you might think twice before you do for the simple fact you could do so much better for your dollar today.

Said that a while back in another section. Couldn't agree more. As long as people will pay it though, they will get ripped off by those selling them. They were great radios, but they have come and gone. I have a couple and they sit on shelves so better radios that cost less get used. Some people however will pay way too much for nostalgia, and never take into account what they are buying is worth half as much. I like the 2000, but its an antique. That is a fact. There are FAR better radios that cost far less than the gold miners are asking for those things. Everybody thinks THEIR lump of coal is gold.

they have their fan club . i think the 2000 is the most beautiful CB radios ive ever sceen . i probally couldnt say that if i actually saw a Browning or a DAK . some of the CPI's were damn nice looking too !
think of it as a old corvette . not on the technological cutting edge , but still can give damn fine performance , look great doing it and give a lil pride of ownership too .
one mans over priced is another mans bargan a lot of times .

They say new in the box ? Well , they ain't that new (used or not) they were first built in 1979 and last built in 1993. My post was more aimed at the guy that might be thinking he just had to have one , IM saying you don't and I think you could do a whole hell of a lot better for your money.

junon600 , good to see you can see where IM coming from with this. It's all good , I realize there's many folks out there that 500 bucks to them is like 50 bucks to me.

same thing could be said for folks paying $500 for a rci base or $500 for a high powered export .

That is a good point.

Some are acting like the cb/10 meter export world has actually made some leaps in technology since 1979. There really hasn't been much of any, unless you want to count mosfets. Now, if someone was choosing a cobra 2000gtl over an Icom756 PRO3, then I'd agree with you that is stubborn nostalgia. But I just don't see the awesome technology in a 2517, 2547, or RCI 696f as compared to the Cobra 2000GTL. What advancements were made in cb design in 20 years? :D That's why Cobras that aren't hacked and haven't been pushed to the wall are worth every bit as much as the aforementioned.

Ask yourself what your cb/10 meter radio can do today, as compared to 1979. Not a whole lot more, I'm guessing. I don't even own a Cobra 2000GTL and have moved beyond buying cb/10 meter radios at least for a while (unless I can find a clean Lincolon ;), then maybe), but I just don't see the advancements that CB has made in the past 20 years. There are reasons for that, there is not a market willing to pay for advancements.

Now if someone were saying their Yaesu ft-101 was worth more than a Yaesu FT-1000MP Mk V Field, then yes of course they are fucking crazy. But if you are comparing two CB radios that use the exact same technology and are 20 years apart in age, well I can understand the preference of the old over new.

What can your "new" radio do that your Cobra 2000 cannot? There has not been anything "new" in the CB world for a long time...

It works reliably. That's what. The parts aren't insanely overpriced. $40 bucks per used meter. The frequency counter isn't crap. Sure there are a couple of people have had some luck, but it's sparce. Like I said the 2K was a great radio, before most of them were cut to crap by idiot so called techs and golden screwdrivers. Also before most of them wore slap out. Yes the radios have gotten far better since 1979. Interesting comment though...WOW. I run many radios, including a couple of 2000s. I will put my Texas Ranger 11 meter base against any 2K anytime. It is a FAR better radio in every way. Simple as that. SO you ask what can my radio do that the old ones can't? Work for starters. These are antiques, they are dated, most are worn out, the parts are few and far between. That is only the beginning of the reasons my radios are better. These radios, working or not are not worth half of what people ask. None of my radios are hacked. They are not pushed in any way. Unlike EVERY 2000 I have ever seen come across my bench. It has been many. They have all been hacked, and pushed to the limit. They have horrible power supplies that must be replaced before any repair of what ole "master" every ones best tech they have been using for years has done to it. Sorry it's fact.

now i agree with SK that people are paying too much for 2000GTL's, and i will concede that they are getting old, but to say that a Texas Ranger is a FAR better radio than a 2000GTL is pure crap!

please enlighten us, oh wise one, on exactly why the texas ranger is superior. LOL

and please use actual specs and design factors in your response.

anyone who thinks that CB radio production and design has gotten better over the last 20 years is either using flawed logic, or just stating an opinion based on nothing.

and why would the power supply in a 2000GTL have to be replaced?
my 2000 does 25 watts PEP no problem using the stock supply.

you'd better do your homework before responding junon600; because i know EXACTLY what im talking about here.
lets see if you do.

Glad you know what you are talking about LC. So do I. I have already listed the reasons why mine is better, this is an opinion. Simple plain and to the point. Sorry if that offends you, but so is life. I don't need specs, I don't need to prove this to you. Cute that you would think so though. Doesn't matter one bit to me what you know. They say that Gadgetman the most notorious radio hacker around here knows his stuff. HA!. My 696 is far and above any 2k I have ever owned. New from box, tuned up, or hacked as almost all of them are. I'm glad you would defend your antique. I'm glad you love your radio enough to challenge me, but I need prove nothing to you. This is my opinion and I will stick to it. I have simply said. The 2k was a great radio, one of the greatest, but its time has passed. There are better radios that are not antiquated, and do not need overpriced parts. The failure rate alone (save for a few very well cared for ones)is enough to prove this. The point is flat. 2000s are not worth the prices that are being charged for them. My homework is done. Sorry, the 2k lost. Funny that you would think I would have to prove my opinion to you. Oh and I will put my 696 against your 2k any day. I also stand by my radio. Most of these over priced 2k' were not cared for, they were hacked up, and molested by so called cb techs. It is very rare that you find a perfect one. Which even perfect is plainly not worth even close to $400 to $500.

I don't need to prove this to you.

LOL, interestingly, you sound just like my "X"

I would agree, they certainly are not the last word in CB radios, And I have had better. Not quite sure what the entire point of this thread is though, If someone wants to pay the price it is there $$$$ and if it makes ya' happy I don't see an issue...

HAHA! Too right, sounds just like my ex too. I simply meant, I feel no need to prove my opinion. I am welcome to mine as everyone is. I don't need anyone to prove their opinion. Nor do I need to agree with it. I sure could give a crap less if someone challenges it. Not my problem if they don't agree. I could care less what they claim to know. I know what I know and am happy with it. So no I won't prove my opinion. Nor would I be so self rightcheos as to think someone needs to prove theirs. I am a bit ashamed of sounding like my ex though.

i think the biggest if not only advantage some of the new exports have over older radios is using SMT technology . its supposed to be much more durable and stable . also seems to be a pain to work on for some , but real techs dont seem to have a problem .

im suprised Ranger/Magnum?RCI hasnt put out a SMT cb radio . i guess a lot of golden screwdriver techs wouldnt want to sell stuff they cant work on though .

i am not offended. LOL

i was giving you an opportunity to back up your claim so that in your future posts; people around here would know how much stock to take in what you say.
you have chosen to stand on opinion alone, and that is your prerogative.

if you are not interested in any feedback regarding your statements, why not just type them into a wordpad document, rather than posting them on a forum. LOL

forum- a public meeting or assembly for open discussion.
