This is a simple and inexpensive way to get your Wouxun HT connected to a sound card.

A Kenwood-style spkr/mic pigtail that works perfectly with the Wouxun is available from Argent Data Systems (argentdata.com) for $6:

https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_30&products_id=70

The product page includes pinout information that is confusing. Since I got confused myself and was fortunate enough to get some help from a ham who had already gone through the process, I'll pass that info on here in the hopes I'm saving someone some headbanging...

There are four wires in the pigtail's breakout: white, black, red and blue. It's easier if you IGNORE the color-code and test everything yourself, because the manufacturing process changes its mind sometimes.

The connector has two plugs: a 3.5mm TRS plug, and a smaller TS plug. I will provide the colors used on *my* pigtail; yours may be different! The pinout is as follows:

TRS tip: (not connected)
TRS ring: (white) = MIC
TRS sleeve: (black) = PTT
TS tip: (red) = SPKR
TS sleeve: (blue) = GND

Be careful to insert the spkr/mic connectors FIRMLY into the jacks. Mine required enough extra force to go all the way in (compared to the stock Wouxun data cable) that I didn't plug it in all the way the first time, thereby failing to make a proper connection and costing me some troubleshooting headaches.

I have my Wouxun KG-UVD1P connected for digital modes using this cable. From the pigtail, I connect to a SignaLink USB via RJ45, then into my digital mode sw of choice, Digital Master 780 (part of the Ham Radio Deluxe suite.)

Thanks to John, W5JHW, for helping me out with this info that Wouxon doesn't provide...

I'm a little confused. The Mic and Speaker interface to the sound card is easy enough to understand, but how did you connect the PTT to make that work?

Sorry, an explanation is in order...

PTT is handled internally by the SignaLink USB.

I'm also putting together a "barefoot" version, with PTT connected to a DB-9 serial connector (plus a resistor, a diode and a transistor - waiting for the parts...), which can then be interfaced via serial-to-USB adapter or what have you... without the SignaLink.

Does that make sense?

Wouxun PTT problem & fix

A few days after I received my KG-UVD1P it developed a rapidly deteriorating PTT fault. Turns out is was a switch failure, not a dry joint as is often the case. Teeny switches not being in stock, I replaced it with a recycled 4-pin pcb switch from an old video recorder control board. Because the live side contact pad on the board is so thin, I opted to run a screened miniature cable from the 'new' switch across to the sleeve connector on the TRS socket (as described by Charles KI6RRX). Screen was connected to the printed circuit board ground plane surface. The switch has 2 sets of 2 pins wired in parallel so I cut off the one nearest the original 'hot' pad to avoid inadvertent transmitting. A little plastic heat glue gave the switch some extra rigidity and resistance to heavy keying.
If you have to make this replacement, be careful to leave clearance for the ptt switch nipple to clear the radio case. If you look carefully at the board edge it has a recess for PTT, PF1 and PF2 as in "---_______---" The nipple should line up no further out than the outer edge of the PCB. Also its easier if you pop out the PTT rubber shroud from the case before reassembly, it goes back on quite easily when you've finished .

Thank you very much for this howto. I just got this working. Now if I could just find someone using digital around here.

I don't own a Wouxun radio yet but I've been thinking about getting one.

I've seen places selling speaker/mics that are advertised as working on both Kenwood and Wouxun radios.

So is the Wouxun speaker/mic wired the same as a Kenwood speaker mic??? If it is... then I have a few different speaker/mics here from various Kenwood HT's that could be used with the Wouxun HT... when I do buy one.

Thanks,
Mike

This was a great tutorial but unfortunately i do have the radio with me but i don't have the USB cable. It would be of great help if you could give me the pin outs details so that i can design my own cable. It would be a great help for me.
Hoping you would definitely help me here.

Thank you very much for the info. Question, Is it posible to provide a schematic diagram for this cable?
