RCI-2995dx lo AM power = 0.3 watt with no mod, 40 watts with mod.

A friend brought me his brand new defective radio to repair. ( 2 months old )

He lives in Canada, and dont want to ship it back to the US seller.

I get 110 watts in SSB when whistling in the mike.

Is this a common problem ???

Can someone help me with this problem ???

I do believe them radio's will get a good 200 out on ssb, so what your seeing is quite low. A friend here in the area has one of these and he is seeing a good 215 from his and that's on a good $450 meter.

Also - 215 is not with a whistle either, that's straight modulation!

215 watts?? Is this with an external power supply?? I also thought they still used a pair of 2SC2290 transistors as they did with the 2990 and 2970? Maybe someone else will chime in I wasnt aware these newer DX models put out that much power.

does this have the old 2x2290 setup or newer mosfets?
was this measured with a dummyload.
what type of meter pep or rms
make sure power and mikegain at fully clockwise
if it has 2290s in it this is pretty accurate
but if it the newer mofets should do bout 200
im not sure how you,d tell which ya got maybe
someome smarter than me can help ya figure this out

Post the serial # and someone will be able to tell you which model you have by that.You might even email Ranger and give the # to them and they'll tell you.

But being that its only 2 months new,I'll go out on a limb and say its mosfet though provided its only 2 months old.If it has the computer style switching power supply with a fan,this is a good indicator of mosfet.

I looked at the RCI home page and they make no mention of a mosfet re-design. I assume they are still a pair of 2290's for now. When the 2970DX went to mosfets they changed the model number to 2970N2. I'm thinking they would do the same for the 2995DX. Not sure.

With all the problems these had years ago with power supply failures I would not want one all wound out. With a nice tune and alignment something in the 150-175 watt range would be ideal. I know alot of shops like to quote 200+ watts from these but I just don't know.
