Modified as follows:

Remove the bottom cover of the radio.

Carefully unplug and remove the speaker.

Remove all 3 of the knobs from the front of the radio.

You will need a metric allen wrench to remove the 3 front panel screws.

Carefully pull the front face of the radio away from the body being careful not to disconnect the ribbon cable.

Look inside of the front cover for 3 pads (see picture)

Two of them are not solder jumpered and one is.

De-solder the only pad that is jumped with a solder bead.

Reassemble the radio.

While powering up the radio press and hold the
DW REV – A/N LOW – MW D/MR buttons simultaneously to perform a full reset. Confirm the reset when prompted by pushing MW D/MR.

Whats weird is both of my 2800M are modified but one I bought and it was modded and the other brandnew one is modded by pushing buttons on the faceplate and can be unmodded or reversed by pushing a few buttons. The other one must have been done internally because its not reversed by pushing buttons it stays modded.

Extended talk mod.

Thanks for posting this. I did the mod, and it was VERY simple. The pictures you posted made it a breeze to find the solder pad. Did the mod, powered up the radio, did the reset, and radio works perfectly. Thanks a bunch.

I gotta try this mod out! Seems easy enough. I'm no electronics wiz, so I'm not too sure on how to de-solder. Soldering is easy, but I have never done the reverse.

Yaesu ft 2900r questions

Hi all, I've bought this radio and am trying to learn how to use it. I wonder whether anyone can help with any of these questions:

1) When I put the marine emergency channel frequency into memory, tune to that, and key the mic, it shows ERROR. Is that because I haven't modded it yet?

2) When I tune the radio to the frequency of a local repeater, then key the mic, the radio shuts off and re-starts. Is that telling me that my antenna is inadequate, or what does it mean?

3) Trying to put all the marine VHF channels I entered into one memory bank, I get the message "no bank", yet I can find the bank to rename it and it shows as empty. Must be missing something in the entry sequence, and the manual is no help.

Thanks for any help with these,
...Tom

FT2900R

Sorry to sound stupid.. But I am totally new to all this radio stuff. I have been playing around with a Humminbird VFH5. I recently purchased a FT2900 and a FT270.
I was hoping to be able to transmit to the Humminbird but I see the frequency that I use on it most is 156.475 And I see that the FT2900 is
Recieve 136-174 but the Transmit is only 144-148? This mod you are doing here does this allow me to transmit on 156.475 or what ever freq in the Marine band?
Also is there away to Modify the FT270 like the Ft2900 if this does what I hope it would be great.. Thanks all.. I can't believe the amount of info on this site.. Carl

I've seen two different versions of the mod. One is unsoldering one jumper and resoldering another, and then the other is just unsoldering one.

I just picked up a FT-2900R the other day, and would like to do the mars mod, but don't want to lose the auto repeater shift.

Problems after Mod.

I have done this modification but now I am having problems transmitting on some of the FREQ. I am using the ft2900 programer software and uploaded what i had downloaded before the Mod. It shows to be transmitting but no one can hear me.

More info on Mod problems

It is on our Caprock repeater system in south eastern NM USA one freq. has a tone the other does not (both RX 147.18 and Tx 147.78 the tone is 88.5 on the second one) and it was working great before i made the mod. I have since noticed that the Step (50 Step) will not move off of 10 kHz. And HM is now B0253. VOX I think is stuck in Digital mode it will only scroll A#### thru D#### and will not let me put in any actually freq. I have been thru the whole maneul and check all of the setting and am at a LOSS.:unsure:
