HY-GAIN 10/12 METER SUPER PENETRATOR 500 5/8 GP BACK IN PRODUCTION!

Great news! Hy-Gain antenna has resumed manufacturing and DxEngineering is now marketing the old reliable 10/12 Meter Super Penetrator 500 5/8 wave ground plane antenna again! I used one of these many years ago on 10 meters with great satisfaction and look forward to purchasing a new one. Don't even remember what happened to my old one, been using a Solarcon A-99 vertical AKA Antron 99 on 10 meters for several years now. This is a great antenna for both ground wave and DX! I already got mine; just need to assemble and erect it. Can't wait.

Already have one which I absolutely love, but it's down for maintenance. Once repaired, it goes back "in stock". Can't have too many Hy-gain Penetrators, ya know!
 
i wouldnt be suprised if the feds squash it so i'm getting several and putting themn away
 
Nah, no worries. It's not being marketed as a CB antenna, so that FTC rule doesn't apply.

FB, Ed! I did notice that the ground plane radial bracket is bent rather than curved. Shouldn't affect the performance though. Ease of manufacturing and fabrication most likely.

I will stick with jay's Interceptor I-10K
I can not see any antenna of similar design out performing it ..
I am Absolutely can not seeing any other vertical groundwave antenna doing better against the elements

i agree that it's a well built antenna and the toughest i've seen. I helped a friend put on togther and i thought it was built like a tank

I too agree that Jay's I-10K is one of the best constructed commercialy available 5/8L verticals available today. As for it's performance, that's been thoroughly discussed on many forums. Of particular note is the rec.radio.amateur.antenna newsgroup; I seem to remember an excellent thread re. the I-10K and it's performance relative to other 5/8L verticals.

I certainly agree that it's a superbly well built antenna. However, if the physical dimensions are the same (and I believe that they are), there should be no difference in actual performance.

In fact, prior to Hy-gain's restoring of the Penetrator to it's antenna line-up, I was seriously considering an Interceptor I-10K even with the $200. extra cost plus the added high cost of shipping to Canada. What Hy-gain has done is provide an economical alternative to those with a budget. I simply went to a Canadian Hy-gain dealer and bought one. They consolidated the shipping cost from Mississippi, and my cost was only $20.00 higher (plus cheap Canadian shipping) than the U.S. $149.95.
 
I just read about someone testing the penetrater and it had less rf energy below the radials then the other 5/8 on the market. it seems like he thought it was either due to the elevated radials or to the matching system but it had a real sharp cutoff below the radials, like zero energy going down
 
can you post a link to the test NB ?
if not , did he/she say what other antennas were compared and how the testing was done ?

NB, it is possible that the raised radials on the P500 could be affecting this issue in a positive way due to the radials location...in an area with less current flows. So he could still be right. Only further testing, by raising and lowering, would tell us for sure.

This is an interesting topic, as to what could be the cause for what he observed in his testing. I took a model I have that is a simulation of a 5/8 wave antenna I call my I-10K. I just changed the height in 2 foot increments with the last change at 5' feet and the first change at 12' feet. The intent was to allow the viewer to see what Eznec5 shows when changing height as it pertains to the current that flows where the antenna/mast attach and below the radials.

I thought this might help explain a little more than just some categorical claim that the P500 shows less RF below the radials. I see this happen at different heights with all my vertical CB antennas, where I have a mast attached.

Notice how the red lines for the current change with height.
