Is there any difference between Grant and Jackson? My main interest is AM capability...

Also what years were these radios made?

Which came first?

Thanks

There both great radios so its up to you which you like better. I know the Jackson ran the Higher wattage MRF-477 but Im not quite sure what the Grant uses if its the same or not being its a new radio.

I am guessing the Grant was made in the early 80's...I think--but I am not sure. If my memory is correct the Grant was made before the Jackson...possibly by different companies.

Jackson have more narrower AM RX because of use SSB crystal filter in AM RX path. Dual clarifier can go from 0 up to +10KHz on TX/RX and separate fine clarifier knob for RX only. My choice beacause of AM RX performance.

Grant only with PCB PC-999 had dual clarifier, but not as wide as Jackson.
Grant has dual 2sc2312 final stage, can do NPC-RC and after that is AM audio monster doing up to 40 Watts on AM with about 170% of crystal crisp modulation and no flattops on the scope. I've done couple of them that way.
Jackson is low level AM modulation, but sounds great on TX anyway.
Of course you can "rewire" AM path in Grant to go thtough SSB crystal filter byt it is not that easy to do.

go with the grant, better receive with dual conversion & as noted above, low level mod in the jackson on am.
of course it depends on what you're using the radio for, 5 bands vs 3 goes to the jackson, 10kc switch......bite the bullet & buy an ic7000

The application is-- the radio will be installed in my pickup. I want a good AM talker that was made in the in 70's to mid 80's. That is why I am looking at these two radios. I have a mint Jackson and I am in process of purchasing a mint Grant. I need to decide which is the better radio for my application.

Thanks for your feedback.

If you want to be time line correct for that truck....you need to get a 23 channel CB....something like a Cobra 29 23 channel....that was my first radio back in the 70s. :)

BTW...that is a beautiful pickup.(y)

I would put the original Bow tie hubcaps on it. :)

This is the Grant that I will pick up next week ...

the s meter in that grant isn't standard, the grant uses the same typical uniden (nissei made) s meter as the jackson, with mod markings on it. the jackson later variations were 6 bands, early ones were 5 bands.

for mainly AM use the grant is a better bet, but if you plan on using ssb i'd install the jackson. it rocks on ssb.

unless you use the low end of 26 mhz a lot, the amount of bands is irrelevant. these are 2 out of 3 of the best exports ever produced, the other being the cobra 148 gtl dx/ss360fm mk2.

Good eye on the meter .... That is an easy replacement if I decide to do so. The exterior is in very nice condition which was a high priority for me. It will be used mostly on AM.

I realize that the 23 Channel would be more correct but if I had that truck back in the 70's-80's ... this is the type of radio that I would purchase.

there both great radios. without me not trying them both on am im not
sure ,. but there both great radios. awsome find

I have a very nice Gray 150 (toggle switch) amp or a Gray 300 amp (rocker switch) amp that I miight use with it. Most likely the toggle switch amp would be more period correct.

Grant Jackson?

Back in the day had both, the Grants had duel finales the Jackson's had one big final, both good radios but the Jackson would hear a little farther on SSB and the Grant would do a little better on AM, both neat radios, I once talked 155 miles ground wave SSB on my Jackson, was using some help and the preamp was working! All these 10 meter high power radios of today were patterned after them!................Oldtimer(y)
