HAMS fought for decades to end controled carrer modulation on many AM mode radios only to see swing kits bring it back ....

The Ranger is a nice low end radio leave it alone .....

A late 50's Heathkit controlled carrer transmiter .... on left.

Those "Swing Kits" are hocus pocus for the truck driver and AM user's that have the mentality of "if it dont swing it isnt working"

A proper tune and align, NOT at a truck stop will do you just fine on SSB

Also DO NOT cut the limiters :bdh:

AGREED!!!!
now doug doesnt automatically do this to the radio. but upon
request im sure he would.but as stated it garabe and not needed

There is nothing wrong with a swing mod for AM - provided it is done right and the operator uses it correctly . . .

Don't cut the limiter. If the limiter is cut along with doing the NPC swing mod for asymetric modulation; then either have a tech set it up and do the work and make sure that the modulation doesn't square wave - or get a scope and do the work yourself.

The quality of this mod is all in the details; it is not just a matter of snipping some parts and putting other parts in.

It is about getting the right wave form from the swing mod. When done correctly, the difference can be amazing. If done wrong, it will sound like junk.
Either do it right - or not at all . . .

No to the swing kit....just as mentioned a proper tune and alignment...dont cut limiters. And use a good shop to do the tune, leave the truck stop bandits alone

The 2950 is a great SSB rig out of the box with the basic 11 meter mod done,I had one a while back and just run SSB with it and loved it !! Got good reports on audio quality with a stock mic.

Robb hit the nail on the head!!

As stated the 2950 is great with just a proper tune and alignment. That said I heard a 2950 on the air that Richard at 8541 electronics set up with the SP-1A speech processor, wow loud SSB talker. I have also heard that the CP-1 compressor made by top gun also helps out on SSB. If your going to buy the radio from Doug just give him a call and he might have a good idea of what to do or not to do.

Robb's right, If the swing kit is properly done its worth it. I dont trust anyone doing a swing kit on my radios. I also have yet to see a radio from a tech that has installed the swing kit the right way! (by checking there work on a scope after there done)

If I was you just give it a tune-up and call it good!

An npc mod with the 2950's variable will allow you to use amps that work good with different dead key input wattage requirements.
If you are going to use the radio 99% for ssb, why would you even care about AM anyway?
