NTSB Recommends Full Ban On Use Of Cell Phones While Driving

As an avid biker (motorcycle) I would welcome the ban. I've had way too many close calls with cagers with their phones attached to their heads. It's so bad where I live I thought seriously about selling my bike at the end of the summer.

Take a good look around you when your driving. I see at least 50% of drivers are on their phones and driving like they are oblivious about whats happening around them.

If they ban ham and cb radios usage as well then so be it. It's probably just as distracting or more so than a cell phone. Is it worth someones life to chit chat on a radio about nothing? It's a hobby.

My prevous job as a Towing operator/manager, I would have to spend a LOT of time on the road. The amount of distracted drivers on cell phones and or texting is apalling. being cut off because the other party would switch lanes with out looking while on the Ph or texting at the time is down right dangerous...... Now as a professional driver we need those phones to be dispatched to the next scene, be it a accident or a stranded person that needs a tire changed( now that is another story in itself the amount of st0opid people that dont know how to change a tire)

Now before anyone sez what about radio's, They work great in the city, but in mountianous rural areas they suck very unreliable.. Now Sprints PTT system is Xcellent you can actually keep both hands on the wheel hold the Ph and talk to the dispatcher by simply pushing a button... Yes you do have to get that ph out of your pocket or holder for that second it takes to get it, and one can say oh it distracts you.

Most of your Emergancy vehicles have headsets for communications....

There will always be pro's and con's about banning cell Phs.
Myself I would vote to ban them Xpecialy TEXTING... If I get a call while driving 9 out of 10 times I will pull over to take that call if it is important.. On the hiway doing 75 I feel it is dangerous.. in town doing 25 eh I will answer.

And yes i do have a radio in the mobile and use it... If it is a high traffic area I just listen, others wise HELLO CQ DX

Some may call me a hypocrate on my beliefe so be it... Cell Phs/TEXTING while driving is DANGEROUS

NTSB recommends full ban on use of cell phones while driving - CNN.com

Could this mean the end of CB Radios in cars to I hope not that would suck big time. I think talking on your cell phone & txting while driving should be banned it will save lives

It's been coming for a couple years now, it is already a moving violation in a commercial vehicle to be caught "texting" and the use of hands free devices is strongly urged even with cb radios and many of the cb manufacturers are installing "blue tooth" connectivity in their devices.

well, most phones have GPS capability. as such they "know" how fast they are moving.
IF the goverment is serious about safety, it would only take a few lines of code in the software to DISABLE the phone at all speeds (say) above 10 MPH:oops:

good idea. the problem with that is a safety concern at a moving speed of over 10mph. + im sure some troll haxor will try to remove the code form the phones and will have thousands unlocking there phones while driving...

Well, I'm not for any more forced control by the Government to be sure. I see where you're coming from but something lke this would cause more problems then it would fix.

I.e...I've called in numerous drunk drivers over the years on my cell while moving at speeds over 10 mph...Im sure there are other emergency situations where one needs to make a call while moving.

I'd be more for serious fines of $500 of more for geting caught texting or making a personal call while driving.

Our society, especially the business sectors are responsible for the cell phone generation and haveing to be "available" by phone 24/7/365. No matter where you are!!! I can't take a relaxing crap during the day without my cell phone ringing with a work related problem :blushing:

I'll bet a lot of passengers would be pissed at that. :D Also there goes any ability to report a DUI while following it. That alone could cause more problems than it might solve.

NTSB is not suggesting or asking for a Ban simply on cel phones while driving..
Instead NTSB is suggesting an Out Rite Ban on ALL Portable Electronics to be used within car while driving.
They are also suggesting a Ban on all 2 way communications within a driving car..

They do however say things like GPS mapping systems are instead helpful to the traveling needs of a motorist ..

If it were to pass as NTSB so suggests and wants..
Then all Police.fire and emergency cars as well as Truckers/cabs etc would have to remove all such gear from their cars so equipped ..

Frankly i doubt it would pass as they laid it out.
Maybe they would consider a true and full cel phone ban (but i doubt that as well )

They do however have the ability to step up both enforcement and fines for improper use of cel phone

Meanwhile, the results of a recent study on the effects of using cell phones while driving are published which show that there is not as much correlation between crashes and cell phones as previously thought. The study says that methodologies used for previous studies had flawed statistical analysis:

Early research on cellphone conversations likely overestimated crash risk, study suggests
I choose not to believe that.

Just this morning I was driving to work reading the newspaper as usual, shaving, eating a donut, and drinking some coffee and some bonehead on a cellphone tried to run me out of his lane.

I would agree with that..
Except with regards to Texting ..
(Unless one uses a voice interface to talk to text & voice to listen )

LOL at highlited text above. Do you honestly believe that? Such rulings include exemptions for emergency services just like they already have exemptions for certain traffic laws. When was the last time you saw a police car or ambulance responding with lights and siren stop at every red light and wait for it to change to green? Such exemptions do however carry a clause making the driver liable for any consequences of his exercising his right to those exemptions.

I have serious talent. I can eat read drink coffee text and get on a bid war on ebay while making qso's on the 405 doing 90+. No accidents atleast not from me ;)
