IC-2820H fan help?

I just received a used IC-2820H in the mail today and the fan doesn't run. 10 minutes on simplex with Mole tonight and it got hot and shut the power down to 5W. Opened it up and it's all connected, no loose wires either inside the radio or at the fan. Tried all three fan settings in the menu too.

I've either got to figure this out, or return it. There isn't a local shop that stocks parts that I can take it to, so I'd basically have to ship it off to Icom to diagnose.

I'd just order up a fan, but don't know if there's a good chance that it could be something on the board rather than the fan itself. Is the thermostat part of the fan assembly, or is it somewhere on the board? I hate just crossing my fingers and ordering parts in hopes that I guessed right. If i could at least confirm that the thermostat was part of the fan assembly, I'd feel a hell of a lot better about a hail Mary parts order.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Try a hard reset ? If u did that. Something is messed up within the software that is If u see no burnt parts inside.

There is a fan mod floating around for this radio. Maybe someone did this to the radio iimproperly?

Here's the mod I found:

Icom designed the fan circuit in such a way, the fan switches on at approx 28 degrees C. I dived in the circuitry, and found a way to lift this temperature to approx 35 degrees C.
The mod if fairly simple, by just replacing a resistor, however the difficulty rate goes sky high if you see how large the resistors are these days.
We are talking about R510 on the main unit. The resistor is located under the speaker, and can be accessed by lifting the top cover, and removing the speaker. At the top of the diagonally placed IC25 you will find the resistor. It is attached to PIN 71 of IC25.
I marked the resistor in RED on the picture below.
You can do 2 things:

  1. Replace the resistor (originally 39 kOhm) with a resistor of 22 kOhm.
  2. solder a resistor in parallel with the original one.
    in that case, you don't have to remove the very small original resistor, and thus can make things easier. You will need a resistor of 56 kOhm to use this method.
If you successfully modified the IC-2820, you will never hear the fan again in normal circumstances.


First check to make sure there is even a resistor in that location. If not, you found the problem.

I guess I was hoping someone would come up with a magic menu item that I hadn't found like "fan on/off". lol

Well the clock's ticking here, because I have to decide whether to just send it back for a refund, or go forward with repairs. I had a similar problem with something not right on a 706 I bought, but the seller was cool enough to arrange for the repairs and pick up the tab directly, but I haven't crossed that bridge yet on this one...

Lets try this... If I can get a meter probe inside the fan's power socket, wouldn't I be able to detect current when the radio is hot if the circuitry is good? That would at least let me pair this down to whether the problem is in the fan or the board. Any idea what the voltage should be? 5"ish" I guessing?

Yeah, been there too... The seller communicated with me last night and there was no mention of a fan mod. He had no idea why the fan wouldn't run. We left it at me calling Icom this morning to see if I could get some direction, but I have a strong feeling that's not going to get me much more than their shipping address.

More likely 12v. It probably says on the fan sticker if there is one.

how the heck could you have damaged the fan by simply using the rig once?

I would TELL the seller to refund any $$ and then return the radio.

BTW, the fan in this radio is waaaaaay too loud and annoying:censored:

Well, I'm a couple hundred bucks ahead of buying this new, so I was hoping to get this dicked, short of having something cooked on the board.

Icom was Icom. Totally non-committal and all they would say was "$83 per hour plus parts..." Is that a 1/2 hour and a $20 part, or 2 hours and a $100 part do you think? "People buy these things used and it might have been hit by lightning... Send it back to the seller..." Big help, TYVM.

Went after the fan with a volt meter after heating the radio up. I had 10.2V at the motor, so I was off to Fry's electronics. They didn't have any of the really nice 15dB fans in stock, but they did have a 30dB 40X40 for $9, so it was worth a shot...

It was a three wire unit since it was a computer fan, but the almighty Moleculo replied to my text saying "just cut the yellow, you don't need it..."

Left the wires long so I could splice in a better fan if this one drives me nuts like people report about this radio. Powered it up, had a nice long QSO, the fan came on, the chassis stayed cool and the power stayed up at 50W.

ICOM had it right tho, the seller was tryin to sell it cheap because he KNEW the fan didn't work. YMMV

Say WHAT? Nooooo.... I paid quite a bit more. In fact I stopped watching them on ebay because they kept selling for close to retail. I'd watch what looked like a deal for a few days only to see it get bid up to retail price in the last few seconds.

Gigaparts had the bare unit on sale for $599 for a few weeks, but even at that, the D-Star module still needed to be purchased for another $250-$300 to make it digital. I watched several swap sites for a few weeks and when mine popped up for $725 (delivered) with the module installed, I dove on it.

I was all jazzed to open this one up and find it in "like new" condition, but when the fan didn't work, my first thought was to send it back and buy a new one, but of course the sale at gigaparts was over and the best price I could find was $679 + module. That's why I was panicked to get this one working, or get out from under it while I still could.

$400. Had to tell me that, didn't you? :headbang lol
