I'm hoping to get some recommendations on a reputable shop and or tech to buy one from. I want to avoid any shop/tech that clips components or jacks things up too far.

Thanks in advance, Brew

Is that a new model I haven't heard about? The original 44 was not an HP (high power model) and is long since not made anymore. Buy used on eBay or the usual suspects.

Good luck

From what I'm reading, it was introduced this year. 40 watts after a decent peak and tune.

I'm a company driver and I'm limited to 13.8 volts via the truck's binding posts. Going straight to the battery is strictly forbidden as are linears.

Has pretty much all the bells and whistles I'm looking for to liven up a long driving shift .:D

GI Joe's seems to have the lowest price and offers a $30.00 "align radio tx/rx for maximum performance" Any idea if GI Joe's is a decent place to buy from?

I also plan on buying a new RK-56 mic for it, GI Joe's price on one is decent.

Ok, that will be classified as a "medium power" radio and that is fine.

But I would never pay that much for medium power.

You could get a great used Galaxy MP already modified and ready to go for around $150

Look for a Galaxy DX 88HL or 77HML or a 99V. The 99V will probably run closer to $200 used.

If you're stuck on new, for a few more bucks you might look at the Galaxy Dx 94HP. This one is a "high" power and can key 40 swing to 100.

I can't say either way on G.I. Joes. I could recommend Walcott in Iowa I think they are.

Good luck

hmm

i would not recommend gijoes he likes to clip the limiters.
he did it on my radio. when i asked him not to.
your choice. i had to replace it when i got it.

If I'm limited to only 13.8 to 14.1 volts via my truck's binding posts, would that voltage be sufficient to run a higher wattage radio?

I don't have a bunch of electronics knowledge, but as I understand it, a higher wattage radio requires the radio being wired directly to the truck's battery terminals. My company says this is a no no.

I appreciate the heads up on GI Joe's. This is exactly what I want to avoid at all costs.

I would also add Doug at Custom cb and Sparky's cb to the short list. Sparky's has some of the best prices around and Doug is a fanatic when it comes to making sure a radio he sells is right.

(And now we can all read the next post where Undertaker complains once again about Sparky's cb.)

:)...... For real though you can't go wrong with DTB, Bob's, or Custom. You might pay afew dollars more but in the end you will have a radio that is done up right. That is well worth it to me compared to say buying at a clearence price from Crapper Electronics and trying to convert it yourself.

Just to follow up, I ordered my DX44HP from DTB radio. Thanks to the folks here who suggested Dave. He's been really cool with my barrage of questions.

His shop is located pretty close to one of my company's terminals, so I plan on taking my ancient President Jackson to him for repair in the future.

Thanks for the replies, folks!
