Spread them coils?

I heard him say that the coils being spread was a problem. It did seem odd that he said they needed to be straightened. Seems like a knowledgeable tech would say the need to be tuned or adjusted?

It's a thing he does. If one of those tunable cans (with a coil inside) isn't mounted perpendicular to the board, he'll pull it off and resolder it so it is.

Not sure if he thinks he's aligning the magnetic fields in the radio.

And that is where the OCD can bring trouble. Just because a coil is symmetric and appeasing to the eye, does not mean it is filtering harmonics to the best of its potential.

Well if they do not give you a variable to adjust it than yes you have no choice but to use the coils for tuning. I thought most old CB's gave you a trim pot so spreading was not needed?

May be he's just Anal?

Oh this is the asshole that used a garden hose on a cobra 2000gtl and then later found out he killed the freq counter but passes it off. The guy is a hack!!!

He didn't spread the coils, this is a radio he is planning to work on and he said he would fix the spread coils. I enjoyed the 980 with a Stinger he built for me. I don't know about that $100/LB solder bullshit, but he does OK work.
