i tried wiring it to my RCI 2990 it will change channel up and down and key the radio but even when unkeyed it will modulate through the speaker.i notice as long as the mic is powered on the vu meter on the mic will swing as you talk even when unkeyed is this normal behavior for this mic? ive searched the web up and down and found very little info on this mic.

Sounds to me like it's wired wrong, or maybe it's wired correctly but you have a little strand of mic wire shorting some pins. Check the mic pins very carefully.

This microphone is exactly the same as the MFJ-299,you got it wired wrong,I build all the cables with CAT-5 and slip some clamp on ferrites to avoid straight rf from my radios,I wired for 4 pin cobra radios,kenwood,yaesu,ranger,etc...,just be careful and watchout for the power pin in the microphone connector from your radio, could fry the preamp in the radio or the mic.

MFJ-297 MFJ-299 MICROPHONES.
