They are just a generic workman type mic. Nothing fancy.

I disagree. I've owned the generic workman type and also owned a skythumper. The skythumper looked identical but on air reports in a blind test were much better. I can't speak for everyone but in my experience it is a much better mic than the generic truck stop rk knockoff.

The main drawback to them is their light weight, they feel cheap.

I bought one and it was just OK. My Yaesu YM-21 works better on my 148-GTL. I was disappointed.

JUSTIN DEPOLIS once said , that most radio operators wouldn't know what good sounded like if it slapped them in the face . I agree . but even a scoped out pefect wave is only going to sound as good from the person using it and the machines that say so . All these NC mic's sound good from the users depending on the radios they use them on ? not all are alike. I personlly like the RK-56 but I've used the knock off CDL's and other much cheaper mic's , my reports were not from machines , they from people and most really couldn't tell the differents , maybe one would say basser and the others couldn't tell the differents at all. It also depends on how ones radio is tuned ? bottom line , if your radio is NPC'ed or cap/resistored / swing kitted , any of these NC type mic's will work very well on those radios , even a good stock mic would be more then enough.(these are not power mic situations ,this is when to much is to much) There's a time and a place for a NC Mic and there's a time and a place for a power mic , How was the radio tuned ? How good do you hope to sound ? Does sounding like being in a wind tunnel float your boat ? Does having your wife yelling at the kids in the back ground ring true ? tv or stereo blarring in the back ground work for you ? ect. ect. Different strokes for different folks.

NONE of my radios are swing kit, clipped, npc, ect i just want a clean sinal
without the background noise which almost always come in a mobile sitation
i didnt mentioned it in first post cause i just wanted opions on the mic itself
i got a cdl knockoff and audio on ssb is a tad lower than the rk56.guess i might
be ruling out the skythumper

I'm currently using the ST-65DX with a Galaxy 88. Reports from reliable people are that it's louder and has a deeper tone than my 636L. As previously stated, it is lightweight, I actually prefer the feel of the 636. Just my $.02.

Default Skythumper

Hi guy's, I think this is my first post on here, So here it go's if you go to the CBRT Site a guy called bigblue did a test with different mic's 636,i can't remember the next one it is old Astatic looks like a hair brush and then 56K and then Skythumper and finally 575. It goes something like that and I tell you that Skythumper Kicked some butt except the 575. It was crisp clean and loud almost sounded like a D 104 with more base or should I say Natural tone. Well thats my two cents and I just order my Skythumper today. So between my stock and 575 M6 and Skythumper I should have things covered.

Best Rgds: Unit 243

Mike
