I used to have fun on MURS using my Kenwood TM-V7A as a crossband repeater. When I would be away from the rig, I would set the 'V7A to crossband repeat my Yaesu FT-50RD HT's FRS signals over to MURS, and incoming MURS traffic would then be repeated back to the HT on FRS.

That way, my little HT would have some pretty amazing "range" (30+ miles) on MURS. I could be out in the neighborhood, the yard, anywhere in the house, etc., and still be able to work at distances much farther on MURS than my HT alone would have offered.

Has anyone else tried this?

I have always wanted to try that with some cheap gmrs/frs radios !

I have a couple motorolas set up this way. I stopped using frs and gmrs on the uhf side though as there is just to much traffic. Swithed over to uhf dot freaqs.

UHF "dot" frequencies are itinerant UHF business band frequencies.

The killer setup is a repeater that outputs onto a CB channel.
Imagine a repeater inputing on FRS or MURS (with a PL tone of course), and then outputing on a CB channel. It would drive crazy the other CBers not on the system. But for such a repeater to be useful, it would need to be located on a hilltop or building-top.

Such a system did exist here in Los Angeles in the 80's. It was a dual-hilltop repeater.
It would input on a hill 50 miles away, in big bear, and then link on 49MHz, and then output from atop palos verdes hill. It was great fun since CBers would drive to palos verdes to jam it out, not knowing that it was linking from another hill via 49MHz.
But such things were not meant to last, and the FCC eventually caught up with it.

Well, I have a Kenwood TS-2000

Put that on Cross Band and I can do just that.

Set the sub side of the radio on 151.940 and the main, well anywhere on HF

I have done it into a set of dummy loads but using antennas,,,,

NOW, that is illegal so I would NEVER do that

so... how is this set up? What do you need?

a 2m/440 radio that can be modified out of band to talk on murs & frs/gmrs. Just don't do this in the ham bands if you don't have the ticket. The TS2000 that Hamer mentioned works, the Yaesu 8800, Icom 2720, a few others...
