Murs base antenna?

At VHF/UHF the best way to increase coverage is by getting that antenna higher. Sure, an antenna with gain is going to do better than one without, but not as much as increasing the elevation of that low gain antenna (the guy down the road from you, or would that be 'up' the road from you? :)).

Yeah he would be up the road from me and hearing better with one of those centerfire quarter wave groundplanes and the cheapest RG 58 I have ever seen. I am running 9913 so that helps some.
 
'9913', oh boy! Not bad coax! But there's one thing you better know about it (if you don't already). Seal the highest connector really well! Otherwise, it's literally a 'hose' straight to your radio :). What the 'hay', seal all the connectors well, won't hurt, keeps water off the desk...

LOL yeah I know about that part of the coax. This is the foam core stuff so Im good as far as that goes. The guy up the road just switched to 9913 as well. His RX and TX have increased alot to. Im still looking for an antenna (y)
 
Build a 1/4 wave groundplane like Beetle said.

It's too easy.

I used an old fiberglass CB antenna.

Stripped the plastic coating off, unwound the wire, cut the glass off at about 19" and trimmed the wire to to about 20".

Fold over the last half inch or so for tuning, and put the wire straight up the glass, wrapping it from the bottom up with electrical tape. Stop about an inch short for tuning.

Using a piece of flat AU or a big mobile mount, drill four #8 holes, each at the four corners of a square(90 degrees apart). If using flat stock, drill a 1/2" hole in the middle.

Solder four pieces of 19" solid copper wire(romex) to ring connectors.

Using #8 screws, nuts and washers, attach each copper wire to each #8 hole drilled.

Attach the glass antenna to the center hole( using plastic insulators), and bend the copper wires to 45 degrees down from the glass element.

Take a piece of 3/4 PVC pipe( white), 5' long and cut it long wise twice from one end, in an X, make the cuts about 2" long.

Attach a hose clamp on the outside of the PVC at the place where the cuts are.

Thread coax through the pvc, screw it onto the connector of the glass antenna, drop it into the PVC and tighten the hose clamp.

You now have a VHF 1/4 wave groundplane.

Tuning is done by folding/unfolding the verticle wire. The radials( copper wires) can also be adjusted by angle.

I guess i'm a bit late onthis conversation, The best thing I've found is an old super station master, a 10db gain vertical. there all over if you look. I payed for one and collected up 4 more shortly there after. At 24 ft by 3" in diameter not too many people want to put these things up. with ten watts i was talking over 60 miles with no problem, with 200 watts over125 with no problem. these are buy far the best murs antenna. they are a high gain colinear antenna so there band width is a bit tight. you can tune them for best center freq, for perforamance and durability these repeater antennas are smoken! It's been several years since this old subject was addressed but the Station Master antennas are very good but they are also very large & heavy.I have the Firestick MURS antenna & it's small & lite & it works well for FREE since it was given to me still in the package.So lite & small it has almost no wind load.No tuning either just assemble,put in the air,& talk. {:>)
