| | Cobra 89xlr Converted? I was checking out a Cobra 89xlr that I recently bought and as I was going through the channels and watching my frequency counter, I noticed that many of the channels seemed to be changed to freeband and bootleg frequencies, for instance 16 is 27.555, etc. Is that the result of a mod that someone did?

| | yep, most likely the radio has had channels added.
easiest way to tell is to look at the solder side of the PC board under the PLL chip. (UPD858)
if there has been channels added, you should see some wires soldered to the pins of the PLL chip that go to one of the switches on the front panel.
probably the CB/PA switch.
try switching into PA mode and see if the radio really does go into PA mode or not.
if you want to turn the modulation up in this radio, its VR5.
have fun,
LC

Funny, the person selling it didn't even know what it had.

| | I am really curious to know if anyone still uses the freebands anymore, I still a lot of calls for installing extra channels but most guys decide against it, I have to assume they want them just to say they have them, though I never hear anyone on them anymore. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
