    Yaesu VX8R POP

This is a frequently asked question in the VX_8GR Yahoo group. It is because the VX-8R is waterproof, and pressure builds up under the waterproofing membrane when it warms up. I don't know if there is a fix or if it is something you have to live with if you want it to be waterproof.

    Yaesu VX-8GR Alignment Procedure

I had this file, but when I tried it I could not get into the alignment menu. Someone sent me another version of these instructions, which included some extra steps. You have to enter a password into the CW ID menu field before you can get into the alignment menu. Unfortunately I lost these...

    Yaesu VX-8r extended battery comparison

I had the same problem with a third party 2000mAH battery purchased here in Europe for use with my VX-8GR. I wasn't sure if the battery was thicker or the VX-8G because people with the -8R or -8DR said they had no trouble charging the extended battery in the desk charger. Anyway I solved the...

    Yaesu VX-8r Review

The VX-8R has been superseded by the VX-8DR now, and joined by the VX-8GR. It's a very expensive radio. You are paying for quad band capability as well as a high level of water resistance. Do you need these? Very few people find 6m useful on an HT. I can't speak for 220MHz as that isn't a...

Elecraft K3 Value at Base Configuration

I would agree. Having owned a K3 (S/N 222) for 3 years now I have had plenty of time to get to know it. There were times in the first couple of years especially when I was very frustrated with the radio and with Elecraft, particularly for the time it took them to implement all the features that...

    Albrecht AE 2990 AFS

I have just taken delivery of one of the new Albrecht AE 2990 AFS AM/FM/SSB handheld rigs in the hope of making some DX contacts while out and about portable during the Sporadic E conditions in the summer. I forgot to mention when ordering that I was a licensed ham so I was pleased that the...

Anyone use a Portable HF Antenna?

Actually I'm not sure if they are really out of business or just clueless at running a website. Try Super Antennas .

Anyone use a Portable HF Antenna?

Nor did I. Martin Lynch & Son in the UK are still advertising them (they call it the Chapstick) so I assume they still have stock. Might be a good idea to order the 80m coil to go with my MP-1 while I still can.

    How to: Kenwood TH-D72 + APRSIS32 iGate/Digipeater

The scripts built in to APRSIS32 assume that the TNC is disabled when the probram starts. You need to press the TNC button until neither APRS12 nor PACKET is showing at the top of the screen, then start the program, otherwise the scripts won't work. Also you need to make sure that the serial...

Where to order 4-pin female mic connector?

Don't knock eBay. I buy nearly all my electronic parts through it now. It's the only place you can still buy single items without getting ripped off for exorbitant shipping charges. I think this is what you need.

    Elecraft K3 Review

I don't know. You should try KComm, it's a bit fuller featured than the K3 Utility. You should also make sure that the tones are not inverted. By default they are the wrong way round. Someone told me the menu option to change but I'm afraid I can't remember what it was.

    CQ APRS CQSRVR

It works quite well if you include how someone can call you by e.g. Echolink. In fact someone is developing a system called AVRS which would allow you to set up voice calls with any other APRS user over Echolink or IRLP. It doesn't work too well at the moment though, plus it assumes that...

another noob wondering what to buy

An HT such as the VX-8GR or TH-D72 apart from the normal simplex and repeater chatting would enable you to do APRS. With your interest in hiking etc. that could be useful. It can beacon your position which is picked up and gated to an internet network so anyone can see your position on a map...

Kenwood TH-D72 2m/440 APRS HT Review

That's really so dependent on the location, amount of locally generated interference etc. On my shack desk it only took two or three minutes. A VX-8GR would take 15 minutes to never in the same position.

Kenwood TH-D72 2m/440 APRS HT Review

It's a USB port but the drivers you have to install on the PC make it look like a COM port. COM8 it was, in my case.

REAL HAM TALK WITHOUT A ANTENNA

I've tried it too. It has about as much to do with ham radio as Microsoft Flight Simulator has to do with aviation. Nobody "can't put up an antenna." I'd rather use the real thing even if it was only a HT or using a dipole tacked to the wall, or go mobile.
