Of course you would want to use a non polarized electrolytic, otherwise you could expect a furious pop and a nasty smell. I would suggest one that is designed to be used as a start/run capacitor for an electric motor. They are non-polarized and designed for higher current and longer duty...
6LF6 tubes can be used instead of 6LX6 tubes. The 6LX6's were a little beefier and I used to use them to beef up Varmint amps that came with the 6LF6's OEM. Typical improved output was around 20 watts/tube. However, 6LX6's have been very rare for maybe 15 or 20 years. 6LF6's would be easier...
I still have a "Jewel Box" that uses a 6BQ5 and Puts out about 8 to 10 watts carrier and 40 watts peak (AM.) Not so hot for sideband. :-) They did make a version using an 8417, similar to a 6L6 that would put out around 50 watts.
Very neat, clean work. I'm not sold on silver mica caps across the output transformers. They tend to heat up and fail over time. Fixed mica compression caps are best and are darn near indestructable.
