Front Stakehole Antenna - what will give a decent SWR?

That's about as good as it gets. Nice meter too!

Front Stakehole Antenna - what will give a decent SWR?

I have had issues with SWR and proximity to metal objects. Many years ago, I put an AR10 Ringo Ranger onto a mast that was side-mounted on a 9 foot iron roof vent pipe 9 (apartment building). The only thing that lowered the SWR was getting all of the antenna above the top of the pipe. I...

Does the whip bounce back and hit the cab?

Front Stakehole Antenna - what will give a decent SWR?

Follow up for Wireweasel and Longhorn Thanks for the detailed replies. I am inclined to try the 102" for starters. Longhorn mentioned issues with sway. Does the 102" ever actually hit the cab? How does it do at highway speeds? Thanks again, JD

Front Stakehole Antenna - what will give a decent SWR?

Thanks, dudes. Yah, I'd use a rear stake hole, but there's always been something about that aesthetically that I don't like. The predator coil is probably a little too conspicuous, but then again 102" is pretty bodacious. I just got a Magnum 257 and I'm itching to get on the air. My...

Front Stakehole Antenna - what will give a decent SWR?

Hi, I'm looking at putting a stakehole mount in my F150 (Breedlove EZN) and I'd prefer to use the stakehole in the front of the bed by the cab. I'm concerned that SWR will be a problem because of the proximity of the cab. I'm considering one of the following: 1) 7' Firestik 2) 120" whip...

    Looking for 50miles in a CB / SSB/ Export?

Reliability and cost are not correlated precisely. Have you ever used a satphone? They are very positionally finicky and susceptible to call-drop. Amateur VHF/UHF gear is cheaper than export gear, especially when factoring-in the cost of base antennas. I argue that with the majority of...

Trying to decide on which one to get and from who

Do you live in Columbus? We should try some local comms sometime. I'm in the Hilliard area.

Trying to decide on which one to get and from who

It's a tricky one, because a $60 difference on a $300 is very significant. If it was half, I'd say WTF. Too bad sparky gets a bad rap, because his prices are excellent. Same with copper. I guess you get what you pay for.

Trying to decide on which one to get and from who

I emailed with him, and his price was the same as Walcott's. But, I'd have to spend Ohio sales tax and gas to get there and back, adding a total of about $60 to my final price. I really want a 2950dx that hasn't been tortured by a tech who doesn't care what he's doing.

    Looking for 50miles in a CB / SSB/ Export?

Robb, Just playing devil's advocate: Is using a non type-accepted radio and running >4 W am power a RIGHT? If it's against federal law, 10 out of 10 judges would say that it's not a right. I'm just sayin'........

    Looking for 50miles in a CB / SSB/ Export?

Yes, gamegetter, I saw that. It says "I don't think I want to..". Perhaps he was mistakenly under the impression that the the test is difficult or expensive. Alternatively, maybe he is a tax-evader or a felon. Those would be other reasons to not try and get licensed.

    Looking for 50miles in a CB / SSB/ Export?

Great point! 2M beam antennas are inexpensive and very easy to put up if you wanted to make SSB really work. - even on a TV mast. However, the rigs capable of 2M SSB are a bit more spendy than the average mobile VHF radio.

    Looking for 50miles in a CB / SSB/ Export?

VHF ham gear is much less expensive than exports, not to mention the potential legal fees you could pay if you choose to operate illegal power from a fixed and thus easily triangulable position. I suggest that you go to: Amateur Radio Repeater database - Updated daily to see if there...

    Looking for 50miles in a CB / SSB/ Export?

Cost of two amateur 2M HTs = ~$200 Using repeaters, 60 miles doesn't even merit this long of a discussion. Export radios plus beam antennas on towers = thousands. We're not even factoring in the fact that you'd be breaking the law with export radios running power from a base station...

    Looking for 50miles in a CB / SSB/ Export?

I assume that you're referring to the free status of the USA before the Pilgrims got here. Get your ham license. No mobile CB or Export is going to get you 50 miles between mobile stations unless one of them is sitting on a mountain top.

That makes this much easier - I live in Columbus. He's 45 minutes away. Think I'll give him a call.
