Took the Technician and General today...

Congratulations! I passed my tech yesterday myself. I did take the general just for giggles, but I hadn't studied for it so of course I failed as expected. Give me two weeks and I'll have that one in the bag too. I'm also getting an 857D. I'm going to use it both base and mobile. Just...

    Call sign availability

Great, thanks guys. BTW, I passed my technician exam!

    Call sign availability

Hi all, If I punch a call sign into the FCC database and it comes up "no match," does that mean it's available? I'm pretty sure it's valid; it has a W7 prefix (I live in Washington State) and three letters for the suffix. But it seems like if it's a valid call or ever been in use the FCC...

    UHF/VHF tri-band all-mode mobile?

Wow, nice one. Yeah, I saw that. If I can't find an all band/all mode I can afford, I might just get a tri- or quad band and play with FM for a while and learn to be happy with what I have. Yep, I was just considering going there to take my exam! I'm not through with the Gordon West...

    UHF/VHF tri-band all-mode mobile?

A big one? Well, at least it didn't last long. Mostly I tend t take things in stride, but when I get excited about something I can get impatient and momentarily frustrated when I run into obstacles. I apologize for venting on the forum. I shouldn't have done that (note to self: take...

    UHF/VHF tri-band all-mode mobile?

Yeah, I resemble that remark. That's me all the way (as a child I never crawled, I just got up and walked). Sure, I could start small, maybe with a two band FM rig, or even something like the FT 8900R. But as soon as I got it, I would be frustrated by its limitations and itching to do all the...

    UHF/VHF tri-band all-mode mobile?

Precisely. The kind of radio I want is just a little out of reach. If I could find one for around $600, I could probably swing it. I might even be able to stretch it to around $700 if I wanted to be really stupid and seriously cut back on some other things, like oh... gas, food, soap and...

    UHF/VHF tri-band all-mode mobile?

Thanks guys. Yeah, having everything in one radio is convenient, and one of the things I have been thinking about. It seems a bit much to have separate radios in my Jeep for 6, 2 and 70cm, then bring them all in for base operation, in addition to an HF base rig. However, I've been looking at...

    UHF/VHF tri-band all-mode mobile?

I'll be getting my technician ticket soon, and am looking for a mobile to use both in the Jeep and in the house. I would like to have a mobile all/multi-mode with at least 6/2/70. 10 meter would be a plus, but not absolutely necessary. Is there such a thing, or do I need to buy some expensive...

    Advice on a setup

Cool beans. This sounds like something I could get really addicted to in a hurry. Especially when there is potential tinkering involved. :tt1: Thanks everyone for your help.

    Advice on a setup

Wondering how easy is it to covert such a radio for other frequencies, like 2 meter, etc.? Heck, if I'm gonna ham it up, I want to be able to talk on all the frequencies I am allowed.

    Advice on a setup

Sure, practically every CBer is already transmitting above 4 watts anyway, so it seems to me this is no different. From what I can tell the FCC doesn't really enforce it unless you are causing trouble or interfering with people's TVs and the like. Looks like I'll be heading over to the Ham...

    Advice on a setup

Why would it be illegal? I thought Hams could operate on 10 meter? Is it illegal to convert it to get CB channels? That wouldn't make much sense, since you don't even need a license for CB. :confused1: Edit: Oh of course. Because it puts out 80 watts. Never mind.

    Motorola CB Radios

I used to have some Motorola CBs back in the day, though nothing as old as your's. Lots of people had them. I seem to remember them being less pricey than the Cobras, which back in the 70s were the ones everyone wanted. A lot of people had Bearcats, too, I remember.

    Advice on a setup

Isn't that basically another version of the 148/Grant? Or am I thinking of something else?

    Advice on a setup

Your points are all valid. However, around these parts there are usually loggers nearby, and log trucks in and out. Those guys use CB for communications among themselves, so chances are very good someone will hear me from the logging site, or else a truck will come within range. I do plan on...

    Advice on a setup

Thanks for the reply, Bammbamm. About the shielded wire, I mean the electrical not the antenna wire, to prevent noise. Maybe just good quality wire and a choke? And yeah, it occurred to me afterwards that I wouldn't be able to use the built in counter to align. I'm also not really looking...

    Advice on a setup

BTW, are the Radio Shack 102" whips any good? I seem to be having a hard time finding them at CD shops.

    Advice on a setup

Thanks a lot, guys. I'll check into your recommendations and see what I can come up with. A few questions: Is interference from my XJs electrical system going to be a big issue, so I should use shielded wiring? I've heard said it is better to wire it direct to battery. Why not wire into my...

    Advice on a setup

Hi guys, Pretty much a newbie to this, aside from talking on my dad's and other's CBs when I was a kid in the 70s. What I need is a good setup for my Cherokee. Although not strictly necessary, I really want SSB. I also want to be able to reach out and touch someone, as I sometimes go...
