I have a 1788 on order from DX Eng - delivery not expected till Dec or Jan. But I am still debating the pros and cons of the 10 to 30 meter vs the 15 to 40 meter.
Very inefficient and very narrow on 40 but no phone on 30 so the 10 to 30 version is basically limited to 10 to 20 meters on phone...
Well, I hooked up my 6 volt (6.31 volt) 5 amp hour AGM battery with this charger:
Was $9.95 on Amazon, but "currently not available" but there are similar cheapo units available.
No more noisy wall wart. No more D cells.
Strange. The hum-inducing 6 volt wall wart I was using generated 10...
Radio isn't going anywhere. So for 4 or 5 times the price, smaller and lighter isn't worth it to me. For smaller and lighter if I needed to be portable I'd take my Sangean X2 with me. One quarter the size of the Grundig.
I understand this radio works best using the D cells rather than a wall wart that generates some hum.
I'm considering an external AGM 6-volt battery instead of the D cells for several reasons:
1) The AGM would be rechargeable.
2) The AGM would last longer between charges compared to replacing...
Given that most who comment on this topic on other sites suggest "experimenting" because every situation is different, I bit the bullet and just ordered a second MLA-30 powered loop as recommended by MFJ. I'll be testing it out within a couple of weeks.
I am happy with my original MLA-30...
What type of antenna "noise sensing" antenna is best to use with the 1026 in combination with the main antenna which is a MLA-30 active loop? My backyard courtyard is small and I have an HOA, so I need to remain fairly stealthy.
I was wondering if a second MLA-30 or an unpowered loop would be...
My objective is to reduce the noise floor in several short wave bands.
With the antenna configuration described below, I'm not yet receiving the results I want - a significantly lower noise floor. I am not able to ID the noise sources, whether atmospherics (unfixable) or nearby point source...
I received an X2 from Optics Planet for $260 with tax (Florida sales) and free shipping ordered early December. $30 lower than Amazon.
Early testing indicates it being very sensitive and feature packed. It's built like a little jewel compared to my Grundig Satallit 750.
I just got back into SWL after selling off some radio stuff a few years ago. Recently sold a clarinet, keyboard, several RC cars, and a Uniden scanner that was totally deaf in my highly encrypted area.
So now into a renewed hobby.
Just installed an SDRdx/uno on my computer to supplement my...
Question about the 1026 with the MFJ959C:
IF I use the 959C in conjunction with the 1026, which of my two antennae would be best to run through the 959C, the main antenna or the "noise/sensing" antenna?
My main antenna is an MLA-30. My sensing antenna would be a rain gutter antenna that senses...
...in Central Florida
In Sumter, Lake, and Marion Counties in Central Florida, not much in Public Safety. Sheriff', Police and some Fire/EMS have gone to encrypted. Some Fire is digital/trunked. Only public utilities remains analog. The transition to digital/encrypted occurred only in the...
Whim: Got the J-pole in the attic tuned up pretty well a couple of months ago - about 1.1 on 2 meters and 1.5 on 70 cm. Just received an Endfedz EF-SWL Receive only antenna. Not sure the best way to install it outside yet. I've contacted a couple of local Elmers to assist. I'm looking...
Thanks. How would all of this apply to a 2 band (2 meter/70 cm) J-pole design between thick and thin elements? Any "significant" and measurable differences - in layman's language and a conclusion of which is best for the average usser, pros and cons?
This is a question I probably should have asked before I bought my current J-pole.
But here it is:
Is there any difference in reception or propagation in a 2 meter or 70 cm antenna that uses thin rod material such as that on an automobile antenna, vs. using a many times thicker, 1/2 inch...
