Ranger TRE-936 FFC

Just received my LesCom L3S-3B.
I might do this myself. It comes with a LesCom 14.7350 eo lp crystal to replace X3. It comes with various wired and unwired spdt switches,a mounting bracket, mini tie strips and a solderable pc mount plug. So,this can go in either my 936 or 959. I might just buy another one and toss the Viagra board altogether. I did check the 959's schematic where I soldered a jumper to supply 8 volts to the Viagra board in the 959. That mod also raised the voltage on the center leg of Q27,whatever that goes to.

Lester wrote in my billing invoice to,"Follow Galaxy DX-959 instructions".

Instructions and tech notes are available at Lester's Custom Truck Shop - Home?Legal information at the bottom.

Lester's answer to the black/green wire is this.
"The black and green wire connector go to the 10Kc switch. The loose switch and connector are for the 10Kc switch.
You can either use a switch already in the radio by soldering the loose two pin connector to it (after removing the wires) or use the loose switch in the kit.
One the band switch, you can unplug the pre-wired one from the board and use your ANL/NB switch by plugging it into the board."
I'll post this in the 'Ranger TRE-936ffc' thread also

Okay,Lester suggested the 4.25 band kit with included 5 position selector switch for the 936. That will solve the problem of trying to find another three position switch and modifying it for the 936. Covers 26.065 - 27.975 MHz. I think it's the LC5200.

Selection Process

Okay again some. Lester of LesCom clarified which board he meant. It's the 8719-192-L3S Cobra/Galaxy/Ranger+Others Expansion Kit for $42.99. It comes with a 4 band selector that can go in the faceplate hole the talkback pot currently is.

P.S. I'm hoping that the board is similar to the Ranger Freedom one board so that adding D75 maybe will turn off the talkback or just put a volume switch in the mic gain position to control the mic gain and turn on/off the talkback with the ability to control it's volume level.

I personally like a good sounding amplified mic. I'm getting the SRA-158 to see what all the fuss is about. My SRA-198 sounds good on my 959 buts needs amplification. I'll experiment some then.
I'm not quite ready to plunk down $$$ for a D-104 or Turner yet. I do however, want to get used to a good sounding mic first that is matched up with the radio.
Well, the audio reports are in on the SRA-158 I've bought. With it hooked up to my Ranger TRE-936ffc my voice sounds tinny and has a nasal tone to it. It might be on account of the 936's modulation isn't up to 100% modulation or everyone else is wrong? :hmmph:

P.S. Everybody hates it

I'm going a different route on the channel board. I ordered a Ranger 120 channel kit from Radio Parts Supply that plugs in to this radio and has SMT technology with no tuning pots. I guess it has a IC like the LesCom board does. I also ordered some pots and knobs that goes with this radio. How cool!

I pulled the covers off the 936 to see what a Chinese made radio looks like. It's got red warranty seal gook on the speaker to board plugin,on both transistors on the back case, and on those on the side. It has the Ranger PLL RCI 8719-99 IC. The two big caps,i guessing one is the audio are both 1000uF 25 volt caps. It's got IRF520's for the final and one beside it. X3 is a 15.360. Some funny looking detector diodes. It looks like a TR-966 board with missing components, this being an AM only radio. Where VR18 goes,it has a resistor across it,just VR14 to set the deadkey. The switches in the front look like they be fun to access. Hope they aren't attached to that pcb. J28's unoccupied.
Looks like DTB needs to upgrade the (audio)caps, maybe replace the detector diodes for receive and NB.

Did a slight adjustment to the modulation and deadkey and adjusted the meter on TX. It's got good 100% modulation now. It's got a PEP of 25 watts in it's current state of trim. The AMC is really doing it's job. I'll have to wait for DTB to do his magic on it before I'll see it's full potential.

Copper removed the listing for this radio.

Explain how you did that please.

Before you pull off the belt...
If you're referring to what I did to the radio without proper equipment then yes,I used a modulation meter,a power meter,a dummy load, and tried to duplicate how much modulation DTB sets my radios at. (read redneck tune job)It sounds good, clean, and clear. I did this after I pulled the covers to familiarize my self with what board it has and what would be involved in doing a little pot arranging.
The Road Devil set at 3/4: Right at 100%
Astatic 636L: 80-100%
Ranger SRA-198:60-80%
