speech compression on ssb

Too much compression and you will sound like crud. The ops on 75 meters that run all the rack mounted gear and Heil mics (POS mics in my opinion) sometimes sound like total crap.. I have told many an op that they sound bad only to get a nasty reply in return, LOL.

I am so glad to hear you say that. I hear those guys from time to time on 38 LSB and they have this monotone nasal drone sound to their audio.

The K 40 mics actually work decent but you have to set it up right.. I have a K 40 mobile (Uniden 520 clone) that sounds good just with a stock mic...

Peak to average ratio is a general term used to describe a typical voice modulated waveform. I suppose to be perfectly accurate it should be worded " average peak to absolute peak ratio". In the following image you can clearlt see that without compression the ratio between the average voice peaks and the absolute voice peaks is much greater than the image with compression thus the "peak to average levels" are much lower.

?

did u ever get your radio back from DTB yet? just curious about your results.

Nope. It's on it's way back via USPS. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow. DTB was swamped with business last week and didn't complete the work until last Thursday afternoon. I had him put a diffused red led at the top of the back of the meter. It illuminates on transmit. Also he run a heavier gauge wire from the power in point on the main pcb to the switch because it was dimming on transmit and modulaion. I had mostly cured that problem by running a 4 gauge power wire into a very short section of Galaxy power wire with in-line fuse and plug. It was severely dimming before I changed the power wire after I had adjusted the ssb alc to the 7:30 position per Galaxy Tech's instruction. I had DTB to set the 959's high am power to 4 watts dead key. Mods are 1. Transmit upgrade 2.Receive mod 3.install a Viagra blue dot 'B' board 4. Open the clarifier 5.tune and align(y)
