Is this a good combination?

Would I need the preamp? I've read that it is typically used as an impedance matcher.

They are cheap (like myself) and plentiful.

Yeah, good combo. Obviously, don't turn the mike up too much. I used mine on a 430S and now on my TS-50S.

Search the WWW for MOSFET impedance converter for D104. Factory D104 pre-amp is OK but you can do a lot better.
