Then the meter is obviously wrong or you have a defective ps, do the math, 200 watts divided by 13.8 volts is only 14 amps @ 100% efficiency.

Sounds like the supply has bad regulation. Could be one of the series pass transistors is leaking. I have several Astrons and none dim. Even pulling half the load.

Mack,
The n2 model radio will draw over 45 amps just modulating (this is on ssb)
I can not run my 2970n2 at full power using a 50 amp supply set @ 14.1, the radio will shut down.

It's no problem on AM, it draws around 28 amps if I remember right.

up date..called astron co. today and they told me its normal for the lites to dim as the lites are wired befor the regulation and or the transformer..he said its also normal for the bottom to get hot and the fan not to come on..he said the fan wont come on untill the heat sink by the meter gets to 140 degres..the bottom of mine gets hot but the sinks have always been cool....so,, if anyone has one of these and you were worried about the symptoms i had,,i guess its nothing to worry about..so i guess i gotta eat my words bout ''buyer beware'',,mmmmm, they kinda taste like chicken..

Doesn't matter what kind off radio it is, 200 watts is 200 watts and unless it's @ - efficiency 200 watts only draws 14 amps or so @13.8 volts.

My ts-430s kenwood uses less than 20 amps @ 200 watts in ssb mode and that's on a astron rs-20a power supply now debunk that.

This is true what you say above...but just about all these radio will do close to 300 peak on modulation, some have been know to do 300 +.
I have listen to several of the N2 models on the air and everyone of the guys that are using them, are using a 70 amp supply to run the radio.

When I first got mine a few weeks back, I hooked it up to a 36 amp PS, on first key it pegged the needle and almost stopped the PS. I am now running the radio on a 50 amp ps, but can only run the power setting at the lowest point, which is around 200.

Soooo, I either detune the radio or go for a bigger supply.
