hello, I am a new ham of a few months, and my only radio, a galaxy dx 2527 10 meter base has started "messing up" on me. It acts like it's overheating, causing me to lose all recieve and get an annoying "hum" in the radio. I have a four way dimmer for the lights, and when I change the dimmer, it changes the pitch of the noise. I was told it could be the voltage regulator, number 2N5301. I could easily send it in to get fixed, but I would rather learn to do it myself. I have a few spare parts here, and more available. Does anyone know if there's another part that would work equally well, if this is indeed the problem? What all will I need to replace it? Thanks for your help!

It sounds like something in the power supply has gone south.

A 2n5301 is used as a pass transistor, part of the voltage regulation, but there should be a smaller IC regulator controlling it. If that is bad, they are common, or you could replace it with several others, the 5302, or a 5303, both have higher voltage ratings.
Ray is the guy (GRTS) to ask, he stops by the forum often, I am sure he will see this post if you give it a day or so.

There was an update to the voltage regulator pc board for this.

The below caps are located on the power supply regulator pc board, EPTOSSB62A
Replace C602 with a .01uF cap
Remove C608 and discard.

Thanks for all the information guys, now I have a place to start. Hopefully this will be an easy project to get me into the hobby.

Let me know how you have progressed with this problem. If you still feel the need to replace the regulator transistor I would be happy to send it to you. There is also another update on the voltage regulator pcb that we did to later model DX2517s that will help your DX2527 as well.

If its humming or buzzing I would also look and the larger capacitors by the power supply section leaky caps will do this aswell. I have a 2527 its my second one i sold the first stupid me but owell well I have another here and its been flawless in operating since I got it the late 1990's I know there were issues with the supplies in alot of these but Ive never had a problem with either of the 2 I have owned (own) but then again I also dont run the hell out of them with getting that last watt out of it.
