Z-180, anyone else have one?

I bought two of these Z-180's through H&Y a while back. I've never gotten around to installing them yet. Mine came with roof mounts and I think they've got up to 14 feet of coax attached to the mounts. I don't want to use the roof mounts, I'd like to mount one to my back bumper but I need to find the right mount because I don't think that the Z-180 will screw on to regular mount, will it? And then there's the problem with the extra coax. What will happen if I add coax to make it long enough?

Hey CT .
On a somewhat related subject , how are you doing with your engine noise problems?

I'm going to have to put the noise problem on the back burner Chainsawgang, but thanks for asking. The doctor said I have severe carpal tunnel in my left hand and it needs to be operated on before it gets worse, So this Wed. Dec. 12th, my left hand is going under the knife and I'll be off work for about 3 to 4 weeks. When I get back to work I'm going to tackle that noise problem with full force!

Thanks Chainsawgang, And the same right back atcha! I'd like to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
You know, with that much time off, I'll probably be hanging out right around here.....looking and listening. Maybe we'll bump into one another some time?

sixwheeler,

Say you bought from H&Y ? the only problem I had with them was the shipping. I felt like they made the price back on VERY expensive S& H charges.

I'm very interested in trying one out though....the reduced staic claims are what interest me.
Let me know if any of you guys know any other suppliers that carry them.

Yes, H&Y. They sometimes have a special on them, so... Also, yes, static levels are alot lower with no compromise in overall recieve performance.

Try it, you'll like it!

agreeded the z-180 is a great antenna.i talked to base stations with that and a grant xl
around the 40-50 mile range on ssb mode.with the wilson 5k same mount ,coax, radio
it struggled at 30 miles best.all these base stations used stick antennas no beams

so......switch kit and master chief , did either of you ever get one of these 180's to try and if so what did you think of them ? anyone else had a chance to use them ?

LOOK! at the post above you! :)

hotrod's used them. With good results it seems.

I would buy one, but it probably works better on a roof than on a mirror mount.

i saw hotrods post . i was just looking for opinions on it form a few other folks on here whos opinion i also respect . see if they also thinks its as good or better than a wilson .

I have one and it works great

Ok, thread resurrection time...so the verdict overall..... worth replacing a wilson 1000? I swing 1400 peak with a 2x2879 driving a comp class C 6x2879 would I melt this thing? I warmed the base of the stinger on the wilson.......If I feel ornery I can dk 1kw......if this takes only 2k pep.......

I have 2 of the Z-180s and also a couple of the Sirio 5000 antennas. All were placed directly on a Wilson 1000 magnet already in place (direct fit). Both tuned better and I have had great results. I finally went back to the 1000 after getting a longer stinger so it would tune on my truck and have never swapped back. I have run the 1000 for years, and had gotten one with a coil that went bad in just a few weeks, then the tuning issue, so I was rather irritated at Mr. Wilson and what seemed to be the loss of a great antenna due to QC issues. But that seems to have improved. Regardless on the Z180, if you can find one, I think you will be very happy with it. Also, no idea when the change happened but the whip on the Sirio and the Z180 is much heavier than the Wilson whip (and about a foot longer too).

in this situation i think id stick with the wilson. ONLY cause the wilson
will take the power.i think id roof mount the wilson though.
