I have a turner RK56 wired to my Cobra 140GTL and it will key for apprx.2 seconds then die. Have I got a bad mic or something in the radio? I can watch the needle on my Swan power meter swing backwards like a capacitor discharging.:headbang

It doesn't sound like a bad mic to me, but the sure way to find out is to wire another cheap mic to it and see if the same thing happens.

It sounds to me like the final (or driver) transistor is weak & dieing. Can you tell us the readings you're seeing on the watt meter?

Does SSB work OK ? if so , might be the AM voltage regualtor. leaking cap ? somethings not holding up ?

easy way to check for a bad electrolytic cap is to bridge a good one across it and see if problem goes away.

saves the time of unsoldering the old one only to find it wasnt the one that was the problem.

your radio is getting old, and i too think its an electrolytic cap that is your problem.

you could just re-cap the whole thing.
wouldnt cost more than about 25.00 from mouser for the caps.

Well guess what? Nothing was bad, there was a short between an expander kit and a resistor. When I pushed down on the kit and disconnected the short she started working like the great old radio it has always been. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Hope everyones Christmas was grand and blessed. Happy New Year to everybody!*!*! Wolf
