I'm downloading the Beta version of "Windows 7" thru Bit Torrent. It will take several hours to get it - as the download is well over 2 Gb's. It is setup to be a ISO file; so I can burn it to a disc and use like one would if they had just bought a copy and installing. It is only good for 30 days believe; but I'll find out more after I set up the spare hard drive to run it.

As a guess, it appears to be Windows Server 2003 (x64) with graphic User Interface that looks like Vista - but runs like Server 2003. I can tell you that Windows 2003 Server is fast, efficient, and near bulletproof. If it can be all of that and look like Vista; then MicroSoft may have finally gotten off of the pot.

What ever O/S you may be using to run you HF rig; this could make it run faster; as Windows 2003 Server can run lots of RAM - unlike XP that can only use up to 2 Gb's!. I'll use it for a couple of days and give a quick 'n dirty review of it - so keep checking back and ask questions or help out the discussion if you - too - are using the trial version.
:D

Update:
Set it up up on an empty hard drive. I downloaded the two available versions of Windows 7; the x32 and the x64-bit versions. Put the x32 version for awhile amd running it for a week. So far; so good. It was - by far - the easiest O/S install I have ever done, and I have done more than a few - too!

First impressions:
It didn't jump up and say 'hey, I need something'. Nope; just took off running without a single glitch. Went straight to the internet without a single hitch, ad I have using it for about fifteen hours only. I am going to put some programs on it and see if there are any compatibility issues. That will be the REAL acid test - IMO. Gonna run some radio applications and see if it screams or plays.

Sorry dude, I can't get that impressed with an OS that has less of an incubation time than the American Presidency.

Vista was released just a short while ago...meaning that either Microsoft is holding back on us OR it took less than four years to develop. Not good news.

BTW...isn't it telling that Microsoft is running the "customers love Mojave...and it's really just Vista" commercials???

I'm running two servers with SBS 2003, and two with 2kSP4. My user boxes are all either 2kSP4, XP, and 3 Mac G5's with Tiger OSX. And I have no plans to upgrade until absolutely necessary.

It used to be that by the time a computer was physically end-of-life, the software was obsolete. This is no longer true. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft is able to stay in business when most computer users are entirely happy running OS's 6, 8, or ten years old....

Right, right, cyclops.
I brought up the Windows 7 thang becasue it is out there, and I managed to obtain a copy. Yeah, I'm hip to the Mojave scam that MS put up - but I never bought the hype. I was hoping that Windows 7 was 2003 Server with a GUI that looked like Vista. The core of Vista - IMO - is a rotten core. I had to take my copy of Vista 64 off of my box and put Xp Pro back on it, just so I didn't have to be surprised with a new glitch everyday that often led to me having to re-install that O/S every other week. It really started to get old.

The Vista GUI is very nice, it's just the crap and BS I can do without. I will say, that Windows 7 still has problems and locks up after you remove a 3rd party program on it. One would think by now that when people add/remove programs - that it wouldn't affect the O/S - but it still does. Disappointed? You bet!
ANd MS? Get your head out of your hindquarters, and start making good business sense!

Yeah, Xp is nearly bullet-proof; make sure you have service pack 3 on it from 'Windows Update', and it is the BEST - IMO!
BTW - If you think DSL is nice, wait til you try a cable internet hook up. WOWWW! FAAAST!

My Home Theater PC has Vista Home Premium on it, and it works really well in that application.

However, I got my son a new PC for Christmas last year, and it came with Vista. It gave him fits. Guess what I got him for Christmas this year? Windows XP. Now he finally has the fast, robust system he was hoping for. I feel bad that I didn't do it sooner, I kept hoping that he'd eventually work through the issues.

Besides the much faster OS, the clean install without all the trialware/bloatware that comes loaded on Dell PCs has made this a snappy machine.

I am stunned that MS hasn't fixed Vista with service packs. I remember a lot of the same sorts of issues with XP when it first came out, but they FIXED it.

when using windows i will only us XP (but use my mac 99% of the time)
been using cable modem internet 13 or 14 yrs (only FIOS is faster)

I got FIBER into my house. Dedicated 3 Mbit down 24/7/365 regardless of network traffic, weather, etc. Also supplies my telephone and CATV as well. It's SWEET.

And FWIW, I *wish* Apple could match the price point on a comparable Windows box. If they could, Apple would rule the world. OSX is nearly perfect.
