what about a firestick fire fly or something else where I have no metal to install to? for a home base stock setup with 2547

Nope.

Unless you see the one you mention when you Google "no ground plane cb antenna".

what if my apt has metal water heated baseboard heater that runs from one end of the room to the other, can I use that with a magnet mount antenna?

Your going to create a situation that fills the house/apt with RFI.
Not good.
Get or make a dipole for your home system, and hang it up and across the balcony's upper edge.

You can even make it yourself, it isn't hard to do.

Or, Make a clamp of some kind to hold a sort of short mobile antenna on the balcony rail and add your own "ground" or counterpoise. Call it a 'counterpoise' since that's closer to what it actually is, the 'other half' of the antenna. Or the whole thing a 'single radial' antenna. That counterpoise is just a wire about 8 - 9 feet long attached to the braid of the feed line at the base of the antenna. That wire can be dropped over the hand rail of the balcony, laid out on the floor, whatever, just don't coil it up.
You tune that sort of thing just like you would any other antenna, by adjusting it's length. It takes a while sometimes but it certainly will work. The 'best' in the world? Uh, no. But certainly better than no antenna at all.

Make a dipole out of aluminum and mount it on an out rigger 4 ft long or so. I have a two old Ramrods from the 70s that look like 1 element on a moonraker with a outrigger still in the box. May have to put one together someday

balcony antenns

Build yourself a dipole and mount it wherever you can on the side of the building. I used to do this quite often. Check out MFJ website for Balcony Antenna to get some other ideas. Look at boat cb antennas as these are all no ground plane antennas. Just a couple of ideas.

yeah, i like these ideas. dont forget that if you do have a firefly or something like that, you can use the mobile antenna mounts like they make for truck mirrors to secure the antenna to the railing.

a dipole idea would probably get you a lot further.

let us know what you find that works.

Make one of these and run it out away from the balcony on a telescopic fishing pole. Hang from the end for vertical polarity or taped to the pole for horizontal if you can find a pole long enough. Even two poles, with the aerial suspended between the ends. Easily retractable and stealthy.

Or use two mobile CB antennas mounted to a dipole mount, homebrew or purchased from the Lakeview hamstick folks.
