Hey guys somebody tell how 6146Ws are supposed to look when new? Is there a silvery spot in center on say one side? How about just above the aluminum ring, clean and clear or silver there also? And the ring itself, should there be any play or looseness, if so does it affect the tube or vacuum? Thanks Mike

The shiny silver spot is normal. Its the spot where they flash the geter to completely remove any air inside. I believe the ring contained the geter.

The silver spot is normal. A 'loose' base band is not, nor is a 'loose' plate cap. Something like that never leaves the factory. It could always happen in shipping, but when it does happen, that tube isn't 'normal' anymore. I've seen tubes like that work, but I think that was a 'fluke'. No idea how long it might have worked, I threw it away.

I've actually had a number of tubes with loose plate caps, and bases, it does not effect them, except you need to make sure to be careful handling it.. I've only had one tube which came from a factory sealed box with a loose base, If they are extremely loose I'll usually tighten them, especially the plate cap. If your careful removing and installing it you should get its full life.

Thanks guys. I thought the spot was OK, uncertain about size. Also, one other fellow that deals in tubes said the 6146Ws are notorious for slightly loose rings, no performance issues, but as stated earlier, care must be taken when removing or inserting. I found some Ws NOS for $12.50, and ordered with some apprehension. They are fine.
