HAM License

There are tests that you can access on line(at QRZ and Eham),to name a few that are excellent for checking how well you understand the material. The book contains the info you need for understanding the material and is also a good reference for later as well.

Be bold and get the General Class book as well and do a Two-fer. It really isn't that difficult if you put your mind and some effort into it. Take the practice tests online and once you can consistently score in the upper 80's and 90's you should be good to go.
Be sure and let us know how things turn out.
If you need any help, don't hesitate to ask. There are a lot of individuals here who are a wealth of talent and knowledge that can help you on your way. Just remember that Amateur radio is a hobby and there are a many and varied ways you can operate. Also, there is always something new to discover and learn in Amateur Radio and that keeps you on your toes and keeps the gray matter juices percolating.

I recently registered for Hamonline. I studied for 6 days and on the 7th day took my exams passing General ticket. I studied for almost 5 hours a day without much prior knowlege of HAM radio. If you study consistantly I think you could pass the Tech exam in no time. The HAMonline study course is good for 2 years. You'll be an Extra long before then if you apply yourself. The Online courses teaches you how to pass the exam using the exact questions from the exam. The books are best for actually studying and knowing all the material you need. All the material can be over welming and can be unecessary to know to pass the exam. I'd use the online courses to try and pass the exams as fast as you can you learn more with experience of being on the air. This hobby is a continuous learning process anyway. Ham radio is continuously changing and there is always new stuff to learn. There was a young man taking his Tech exam the same night I took mine. He was 6 years old and he passed as well.

I have the ARRL book and the Gordon West book. The Arrl book reads very much a classroom textbook; the Gordon West book just goes through the question pool and gives the answer with a quick explanation why.

It depends on your learning style. I really like the Gordon West books. I must have had the Extra class Arrl book for a year and still really didn't get much, but after 2 weeks of the West book, I passed the Extra with only 2 wrong answers
