2 Broken CBs

I might of found the problem with the 77-120...
On the right side of the board there is what looks to be a transistor, but it has 5 pins. Not sure what it is.

Anyways, within seconds of the power switch being turned "on" it gets so hot I cant touch the metal on the other side of it.
I emailed Midland a couple days ago about a service manual, they havent replied.
Ive done some poking around and got a sign of life: If it hasnt had power applied to it in a while it will beep when powered up. After that its dead again.

My friend wont let me touch the 882, his dad gave it to him and I think hed rather junk it than have me tear it open and try to fix it.

Good job then!

Get yourself a tube of thermal paste, and have at it. Replace with OEM equivalent, or better.

Don't forget the mica insulator when you reassemble it!

I will have to say the part your you have a pic of is either the audio chip or the volatage regulator. It is possible for this part to get warm and be operating ok, but if it gets so warm that you cant touch it then that is another thing. Do you have any cold spray around or at least a can of air; then you can try spraying some on the heated parts and see if that brings more life into the radio and if it does you can try to locate a replacement part, but in some cases it may be something behind this part that caused it to fail. Your senses are your best tool, take a magnifying glass and go around and look for and charred or burnt parts and you sense of feel if anything else seems to be getting quite warm especially in the are on the back of the radio where there should be one or two transistors with 3 pins mounted to the chasis and are the driver transistor and final transistor stages of the RF. Take a look around and write down anything unusual or take pics and note any heated parts while RX and TX. Good luck.
