Greetings from Oregon - the shower me state,
I'm Gus and I have an old 142 rig that's been serving faithfully until a couple of years back.

While the unit receives 5x5, the transmitting modulation is near 0% by the gauge. The SWR seems okay and it's mated to an A-99 Antron antenna with RG8 cable, grounded with copper wire to a ground stake 6 ft. In the ground.

The trouble started about a year after receiving this rig back from 1 Stop CB shop for the installation of the potentiometer to reduce output wattage to my amp. I only recently learned of their poor reputation recently via a tattletale web site.

Please let me know if you know of a reputable shop in or near the PacNW that can affect these type of repairs on such an old rig, and any other details you may have have on this old rig.

Thanks and a lift of the lynch lid.

For anyone that may be watching this thread just got a verbal reccomendation from William for a Magnum tech shop in Ontario CA that's much closer to PacNW folks LL #909-390-5056.

Well, just going to send 'er in to The CB Shop in Ontario, CA and see what they can find:headbang

Update: I'm hearing more and more from other forums that The CB Shop (Craig) is an honest and fair repair shop.

While mechanically inclined, (auto repair, engine rebuilding, etc.) and I'm no stranger to adding drives and cards to my computer, I'm a rank novice to electronics. I wouldn't even know what my finals would look like  Hooking the amp to my mobile radio yielded nominal results, so it seems the problem is with the radio. Shipped 'er out yesterday to The CB Shop in Ontario CA, have heard some dazzling reports about their work so thought I'd give 'em a chance.

I recently got a 142 GTL off ebay and it's really nice, was bone stock except someone had put a 2SC1969 final transistor in it, I think it came with a 2SC2312 originally. Nothing else had been messed with.

2 things I did find wrong with it, though.... the squelch knob is worn out, the pot is about to fall apart, so I will be robbing a pot from another radio in the junk pile here soon, it hasn't completely fallen out of the radio yet, but it's definately on it's way. The other thing is the Dynamike pot... It has 2 spots in it, that don't work so well. Cuts my audio back or completlely out, so I have to avoid those 2 spots. Will be robbing another pot from another old radio soon to fix that as well. I already cleaned the pots with contact cleaner, they barely worked at all when i got it, I guess the radio sat up for a LONG time in the closet as it looks brand new still.

Now that I have done a good tune up on it, it talks like a big radio, I really like it, and have had nothing but "amazing" reports on it so guess I got a good deal. Awesome little radio. I prefer the receive on it about 5:1 over my RCI 2950 with the Scottky diode mods and all that, the Cobra still has a cleaner stronger receive.

As for your particular radio, sounds like the final is bad, or something went wrong with the AM Carrier pot mod they mounted on the side of the cabinet for your vari-key function. There are a couple different ways to do it, I suspect they just removed the pot from the main board and ran the wires over from the holes to the pot mounted on the side of the radio. Probably cost them $2 and maybe 20 minutes time they probably charged you $50-$100.

Well, they received my rig at The CB Shop in Ontario Ca., and will get started on it this week. I'm thinking finals but will post what they find. :bdh:

:w00t: The radio checked out fine! Turns out there was a gremlin what shoved some gook into the microphone plug
