are 2sc1969 still in production, it is my understanding that they have been discontinued; if they have are there a good plug and play replacment?

The ERF2030 or IRF520 Mosfets are a good replacement for the 2sc1969 transistors. The mosfets require a little modification to work correctly, but they do a good job and are a whole lot cheaper.
