Anyone know the Minimum & maximum voltage to operate the Wouxun KG-UV3D?

The reason I'd like to know is that I would like to use "PowerGenix AA 1.6v 2500 mWh ZiNc High-Voltage Rechargeable Batteries in the 5 cell AA pack.

With a full charge the stock 1700 mAH battery reads 8.4v (but drops to 7.9v & stabilizes), the rechargeable ZiNc will start out at 9v & stabilize at 8v.

If the info is already out there I haven't been able to find it....could use some help on this.

So far I am very pleased with the radio!

Thanks in advance…….

Good idea. Start at the "nominal" voltage of the battery pack. Lower the voltage in 0.1 volt steps until the radio malfunctions. Note this voltage and never go lower.

Then return to "nominal" and raise the voltage in 0.1 volt steps until it starts to melt. Back off 0.1 volt from there, note the voltage and never exceed it after the radio is repaired.

Not cute...Thanks for nothing....

Hook it up to a variable power supply and see where it complains.

Gee.....I took your advice but now the radio doesn't work anymore, what do you think it could be?No really ..... I didn't think this was such an "off the wall" question!

I really hope that no new hams saw your stupid response and blew up their radios, fun is fun but some people read these forums expecting to get real help & answers to their questions.

I'll try not to judge the entire forum because of one a__h__e!

Next time try to think before you post!

You can e-mail or PM me if you would like to discuss this any furthur.

Gee here's an idea, why not read the manual and see what the voltage specs and tolerances are? You do have the manual and it does state that doesn't it? If not then it's not much of a manual. Most HT's are designed to provide full output when operated from a nominal 12 volt source and somewhat less on battery power. The small difference you are looking at in battery voltages is inconsequential.

Oh, and try not to get your panties in a knot. Most of here are adults and know a joke when we see it.

ZKX - chill, man!

Like CK said, the manual for any equipment will tell you what you need to know...or it should. If the manufacturer doesn't make that clear enough, then anyone with questions should go directly TO the manufacturer for clarification.

UPDATE!

I contacted the manufacture regarding the max voltage question ......please find the question and reply below:

Dear Wouxun

I am very pleased with the Wouxun KG-UV3D handheld radio S/N: XXXXXXX716, I recently purchased on February 22, 2011 from “Ham Radio Outlet” .

I have found the radio to be designed well with a high degree of quality & workmanship, thank you for providing such a fine product.

I have a question; what is the maximum safe operating voltage?

I would like to use "PowerGenix AA 1.6v 2500 mWh ZiNc High-Voltage Rechargeable Batteries in the 5 cell AA battery packs.

The 2500 mWh is the equivalent of 1600 mAh.

With a full charge the stock supplied 1700 mAh Li-ion battery pack measures 8.4v (but drops to 7.9v & stabilizes), the rechargeable ZiNc will start out at 9v & stabilize at 8v.

The 5 cell packs would only be used in an emergency situation, I have purchased 2 extra 1700 mAh Li-ion battery packs & 2 extra 5 cell AA battery packs.

As you know the manual states operating voltage as 7.4v .

Thank you in advance for your prompt response.

Best regards

Dear Rich,

Good day ! First of all, thank you for purchasing our dual band KG-UV3D.
Hope you will enjoy it.

Well, frankly speaking, we do not suggest you to use the 9V battery, which with high power and may damage the radio.
8.5V with the best prformance. Pls note.

Thank you.

I'm not really surprised they said that in order to cover their asses if something were to go wrong not directly attributable to the battery pack. I think you will be in for a surprise if you load that battery pack up with brand new alkaline batteries and measure the voltage. I am willing to bet you will see almost 8 volts from the five batteries. Brand new Duracell batteries are right about 1.6 volts when fresh. That would be no different that the rechargeables you are wanting to use. Me personally I would use the rechargeables that you want too. I made a career in commercial broadcasting electronics and have NEVER seen a piece of gear that was that sensitive to a few tenths of a volt. One thing the manufacturer failed to mention is the fact that when transmitting, especially on high power, the battery voltage will drop and thus it will not be as high.

this has been discussed in more detail in the wouxun yahoo group. i'd suggest looking there.

These batteries have a higher nominal voltage don't have the capacity of a standard nickel metal hydride battery.
