I picked up a Uniden Washington some time back used. I was informed the radio was bone stock, not touched, hence the reason I bought it.

Last night I decided to see what kinds of power numbers I could get off of my Radio Shack meter.

Radio dead keys to 4 watts. On AM it swings to 22-23 watts. However on either sideband it swings to 28-29 watts.

I was under the impression on sideband the swing shouldn't be anymore than on AM?

Also stock didn't the Washington only swing to like 10-12 watts?

well two things are you using a dummyload to check output?
and i dont trust radio shack meters for checking output there
good for swr though.the am carrier seems good the pep [swing]
on amm and ssb seem a little high. you have a amp or anything else
hooked up while doing this?

I have one I bought new 26 years ago which is peaked with a modification done to the microphone circuit to open the audio frequency and here is what I see on a LP-100a into a dummy load: 4 watts dead key with 12 watts PEP. SSB is 12 watts. I have a second one I got for parts which keys the same with the same PEP. (I needed the meter out of it and it was pretty trashed so its a donor radio). I have never seen one do more than this into a dummy load, and if so, they were fairly distorted on the scope the more they put out over 12 watts.

Everyone says it is the best sounding radio with the D104 I have. It is my favorite.

If it was "bone stock" don't you think the modulation limiter would be operational?

Yes and that's why I'm asking...plus you should know as well as I do the word "bone stock" means different things to different people. Some people call a radio "bone stock" even though the cover has been removed and some of the pots have been turned.

BTW I've never had a bad report of audio with this radio.

Bone stock cb radios do not normally emit more than %100 modulation so if they're legally sold to only transmit 4 watts carrier the pep output should not be more than four times the resting carrier so now you will know next time if a cb radio is producing more than 12 watts pep that it has been fiddled with and is not bone stock or out of the box bone stock.

You said:"I was informed the radio was bone stock, not touched, hence the reason I bought it."

The seller was less than honest with you. Did he qualify it with the standard "To the best of my knowledge"? You may want to keep this in mind for any future dealings with him.

Without checking it with good quality power meter and a dummy load it could be either the amc has been defeated and the alc screwed to maximum or it could simply be your radioshack meter is grossly innacurate, not unknown for radioshack stuff, could even be if its the poorly shielded type of meter radioshack sold way back its picking up stray rf, as long as your using an antenna which is a reactive load your never going to have any accuracy, even a cheap home made dummy load is better than an antenna.

if you can read a schematic you can check if the amc transistor been removed or anything close has been physically clipped, you can also check that the horsehoes (presets) that control am carrier power and alc (ssb peak limiter) havent been turned as far as they go,these are tell tale signs that a nugget has been at work in your radio,if you dont see these signs suspect your own test setup as mentioned before.

its a bit early to be judging if the seller was dishonest guys.untill its confirmed the radio has been messed with, which is very possible, its better to give someone the benefit of the doubt,i've seen many people accused over the years and reputations destroyed because the person pointing the finger either did it themselves or they did not have sufficient technical ability to be the judge of what really happened.not everything a person tells you about what happened to their radio is true, ask any decent repair tech and you'll get unbelievable amounts of stories that people tell them to protect their own stupidity, idiot diodes didn't earn that name for nothing.

I have an original (pre Uniden) Presedent Washington Base that don't put out the numbers you posted, and that's after it was peaked back when I first bought it.

My Uniden Washington does 4 watts DK and 12 watts PEP.

I like the Washington, but don't use it much. Just not enough audio for my preference. I usually run my old Pearce-Simpson's and SBE's. Those radios will spoil you with loud, crystal clear audio.

4 watt dead key and swings to about 9 watts on AM....ssb it will swing to 20watts with a power mic....with the stock mic 11 watts.....those numbers are what I get with my dosy TC.....my daiwa 801 does not measure swing very good.
