RM ITALY KL-203 BOARD

RM Italy KL-203 Amp

I have a KL-203 and it is a great little linear. I run it with my 2950DX on the base. I have never had anything go wrong with it. I also have a Palomar 250HD amp, but the only thing i do not like about the Palomar is the stupid delay it has on the AM side. If you are using it and talking to someone it has a 2-3 second delay before you can hear the other person. So if so one keys up right after you unkey you will mis about 2-3 seconds of what they had said. The KL-203 does not do that.
 
I'm not familiar with that particular Palomar, but it sounds like it's set to SSB mode. When using SSB there is a delay in the relay circuit due to the nature of sideband signals, but with most amps you can turn the delay on or off. It shouldn't be on all the time.
 
It has auto SSB. I do know about the delay on the SSB. Someone told me that it can be fixed in order to do away with the delay on AM. But i will not do it because i am not that good, and it is to nice and a good working Palomar for me to miss it up. I will not put my hands in anything i have unless i know 100% on what i am doing.

I'm just getting back into CB (and studying for my Technician Class) after a 40 year or so lapse. I have a KL203P (Blue with a switchable preamp) that I would like to cable up remotely behind my rear seat. I'll be mainly running AM at first. I'll wait a while on SSB.

Is the difference in the AM/SSB mode of an amp mainly to switch a delay out/in? I'll be wiring the power via a relay so I can switch it on/off but have been wondering about the implications of running the amp in one mode and the radio in another. I would have to use another relay to remotely switch from AM/SSB or stay in one mode until I stopped the truck to switch it on the front panel.

I apologize if my question isn't clear. Will I damage the Galaxy 959 or KL203P if the KL203P is in SSB and the 959 is xmiting AM (or vice versa)?

With most CB-style amps that I've seen the only difference between modes is in the relay delay. In some higher-quality amps switching modes also changes the bias, thereby switching between class C for FM and AM, and class AB for SSB. As long as you don't mind that a tiny portion of a person's reply might be cut off by the relay remaining engaged slightly longer you can just leave the amp in SSB mode all the time. In the vast majority of amps the SSB delay only causes the relay to remain engaged a fraction of a second longer than AM mode.

And that is exactly what I was hoping for. I'm going to build a console extension between the between existing console and the dash and don't want or need the heat of an amp to deal with. The heat from the 959 with the output turned down is enough for me even with a ventilation fan. A remotely mounted amp will solve that little problem.

And BTW I liked what you did with the biasing of the KL300. KUDOs. Like some others I am financially challenged so must improve the inexpensive gear I can find the funds for.

A LPF is next, then maybe the KL300. Again, thanks.

Is it possible for a body to change out the output power transistors to a similar or equalivalant transistor to add more wattage and work properly ?
 
I imagine so. I rebuilt a grenaded one with 13N10’s. Not too sure what you may find as far as more power though. Keep in mind the circuit board is double sided.

As a general rule with amplifiers when you blow the finals it's best to replace them with the same final. In some amplifiers the finals have been discontinued so you have to use the closest replacement, some changes to other parts must happen in this example. This work is best done by someone that knows what to do.

With the kl203 they are pretty inexpensive so if you have a blown amp and want to experiment with a final that is close to the original go for it. If you have a working amp and you want to just drop in a larger final to magically get 300 watts no, not gonna happen.
