I know its a hit and miss band and limited but i don't want a yagi(waitting for xyl to give the ok for a tower)so i have narrowed it down to the PAR OA-50 or the KU4NB SQ-50,i have a clear shot from s.e. to s.w over our lake and n.w. to n.e,i can get it on a mast on my roof so it would be about 30ft or so off the ground,I have my 2m coverd and my 10m threw 80m coverd for now so i guess what i am asking can anyone give me a opinion on what way to go they both have good reviews.........I have looked at the AR6 vertical also but living out in the sticks i think a vertical is out of the question.....
Thanks,
KD0NSC...

A vertical will be fine for DX. DX signals twist and turn all around so vertical/horizontal is not critical. Just put up the get an antenna with the greatest gain you can afford and get it up as high as you can. You'll do fine.

Good luck

i ran alot

of 6 mtr till 2004...you need a horz antenna if you want to run ssb...am/fm cw will work with vertical.I ran a 6 mtr dipole and worked 45 states and all of UE...73s de n0zna/John oh yeah it was a rci5054 25 wt radio...

Horizontal ONLY on VHF & up is mostly for LOCAL SSB work. That is the custom. VHF & up Contesters and serious local QSO'ers traditionally have chosen horizontal beams for SSB work. FM repeaters will ALWAYS be vertical. DX can be worked with any antenna when propagation is present.

OK here is a pick of my roof......The 2m is on the north side and i removed the Maldol and put the gray pipe with balun on that tripod....Cleaned up the roof abit so now my option is mounting a 3rd 3ft tripod between the two already there and either put a vertical on a 6ft pole with a loop mounted under it running two coax cables OR would i be better off mounting a 6m yagi on the tripod with a 6ft pole and just run one coax with power and have 6m coverd with just a yagi. The tripod would be mounted right between the two wirrly birds..

A50-3S yagi would work right......

If there are no repeaters around me a vertical will not work right so it would need to be a OA-50 or a yagi right.....

Ok so after a long night of reading and other opinions I have decided to put up a vertical now knowing haveing a repeater close by isn't all that important for 6m ssb and FM simplex......

Thanks for those that responed to my post.....I now will decide what Vertical to get and hopefully reach out when 6m opens up...

Perhaps look at making a moxon for 6 meters, put the vertical above the moxon and have the best of both, horizontal and vertical, Moxons are a small footprint but good performer.

Another consideration is that 6 M is 4mhz wide. A typical vertical isn't going to be 4mhz wide. You'll need to tune upon installation to favor the higher end 53~54mhz where the repeaters are. Or tune & favor the lower end where the SSB is. Doubtful you'll find one antenna that will do it all. Unless you have an antenna tuner that covers 6 meters. In this case I would favor the lower SSB portion and then tune up to the repeater area with the tuner.

That 6M repeater likely doesn't have much activity on it. 6M is best known for the exciting SSB DX when the band opens.

Good luck

When 6 is open you will have alot of fun with the omni angle, they are a great little antenna,I use one at our cottage in the summer,I put it on 2 10 ft sections of radio shack mast and clamp it to the railing of the dock and it works great,I have everything marked so I can take it apart when not using it,the whole setup goes back up in 10 minutes,I'm getting the stressed Moxon from Dale to try this summer,it has great reviews on eham and I have worked a bunch of guys that are running them, good luck with the loop and enjoy 6 when it opens.
