Sideband CB Radio

I always liked my Galaxy DX-959. I think it's the same board as the TR-696F...

The frequency drift on SSB doesnt bother you?
you must be ok with adjusting the clarifyer now and then.

maybe its hit and miss.
probably the only way to be sure is to put it in a temperature chamber.

...Snip...
Can't say enough bad things about that POC Cobra 148 GTL NW/ST though. Of that particular model, I had aligned 2 from some locals, and only one sounded OK/barely passable. Weak! You can't even get 12 PEP on SSB without them getting loose/unstable. Receive is nice; but I consider that model a non-starter.

GO figure . . .
Maybe the 148 GTL I had was an anomaly.
Hard to say.

Nope, The "normal" ones do it to. I had one that did 15 watts AM, 6 PEP on SSB if you were lucky and screamed into a power mic with a tone generator. No NW OR ST on it either. Receive is nice on them though. And no, Not maybe but it IS an anomaly the one you reviewed is nice. I got rid of it and got a galaxy that apparent can't be aligned worth crap. But when I get it on frequency with someone I get nothing but good reports out of it. Nice audio and does 25 watts on both AM and SSB. And for a little "bump" I put an OLD school cobra power desk mic infront of her. Sounds real clean.

I agree, the 959 does not impress me at all. I suppose I would choose a Galaxy 979 or I might try one of the new Uniden SSB radio's. I had a 696 freedom one for a short time, I had to keep looking at the radio when I was talking SSB to make sure it was not a Galaxy 88........lol.

Bought one from Sparky's CB radio in IL. Was disappointed when I checked the alignment on it a year after I bought it, as well as the unlocked clarifier job they did. Not pleased after I checked it out! However, after I aligned it, the reports came back as 'clean and clear'.

The TR-696 FD-1 is an OK radio and has the same/similar chassis as the Galaxy 959. If you like the 959, you will like the TR-696 radio too. Just make sure they give it a REAL/FULL alignment if you want to use it as a daily user - IMO . . .

Did you align it with an hp frequency counter or your kenwood radio?

Nah: with a Protek 9100.
Works real nice.
